There are easter eggs like "s a r r" and "barels", but it seems that there is a recently discovered new class of codes that I call the REAL cheat codes, and what is probably what the server software refers to as "Cheats" as it works on some MP servers, but not others.
These cheat codes have 3 main differences from easter eggs:
1) The "`" key must be pressed at any point in the game to toggle the cheats. It must be pressed to turn them on every time you start the game.
2) Unlike easter eggs, which only result in graphical changes (usually fire), cheats actually affects the ship (sinking it, making it jump, etc)
3) Cheat codes work on ALL SHIPS!
Thus far, I know of 2:
"fly" - makes the ship jump in the air. If pressed during a jump, the ship will jump while in the air.
"sink" - causes the ship to sink as if under the "sink" trigger in the mission editor. pressing it more than once causes the "clouds" to dissapear, or even prevent the fhip from sinking if pressed early enough!
Attached are 2 pictures. The first is the result of using the "fly" code repeatedly, the second of the "sink" code at work.
As is, collisions can be easily averted and sinking can be prevented (or started) using these codes, but there HAS to be more!
Does anyone know of a list of these codes?
-
Hmmm... Telling everyone about hidden codes seems to be cheating in itself, to me. Spoils the fun somehow.
Moved to small talk. I keep saying: the Ship SImulator 2008 section is ONLY for technical support questions about the demo version. Thanks.
-
To me why both with the game if you'r going to cheat to me
in the end you'r only cheating you'rself
;)
-
Cheats—fly, sink, see, duck, lookup—and Easter Eggs—flames, candles, barrels, chemical, bonfire, torch, megamindy—are all given in the Captain’s Journal.
-
Hi Marty.
I always think that hunting through all of the documentation to see where the "gems" are hidden adds to the enjoyment. When someone tells me exactly what the gems are, they loose their "value" to me.
But RMS has blown some of that fun (for me), or would have done if I hadn't already don ethe hunting.
All a matter of taste, I suppose.
-
Hi Terry,
I agree that it makes the exercise pointless. However, VSTEP decided to publish them all in one place in the booklet included with Collector’s Edition.
Regards,
Marty
-
thing is, its not fun for one who spends time trying to find out the cheats. It is annoying. Not fun...
-
My brother William asked if there was any cheats for SS08.
-
Well there will be a Bill for that.
(William, Bill, get it? No? Oh well, just me, then)
-
Thanks, Mad_Fred!
Thing with these cheats is they are the answers to all of life's problems in ship sim!
Rammer did massive damage to you in MP? use the sink code to stay afloat!
Collision inevitable? use the fly code to jump over them!
-
Is that the Mad Fred who hasn't posted anything in this thread?
Or was he wearing his magical cloak of invisibility again? We moderators hate it when he wears that and rides around the moderators coffee-house at high speed on his unicycle. Cups of coffee go flying around everywhere.

GAHH! WHENEVER I SEE MVSMITH'S ICON, I ALWAYS THINK OF MAD_FRED!
-
Hehe..Different Muppet. ;D
Nope Terry, my cloak's at the drycleaners and my unicycle has a flat tire. So it wasn't me this time. And where's the fun in throwing cups of coffe around on foot and fully visible?
-
Oh-oh!
So who was doing it just now? Are we haunted?
-
Yup.. but the coffee-house spirits never showed themselves much when I was doing it.. good opportunity for them now, I guess.
-
Well don't just stand there. Give me a hand to clean the place up, before Luc comes back. He'll do his crust at this mess, otherwise.
Thanks.
-
Whoops, sorry..
* grabs a mop and bucket *
-
Thanks.
By the way, isn't it a nice day out there now? Compared to yesterday.... I'm going for a stroll by the harbour, camera in hand once we've cleaned up in here.
-
Some people have all the fun! ;D
It's actually pretty grey and wet on this side of Holland. :)
-
Nice bit of off topic banter there
-
The topic was log since exhausted. Like all, the things being discussed tend to drift. But Fred and I were talking about cheating (he cheats with his cloak).
-
I'm not complaining, please continue, I was finding it quite interesting reading what sorts of things you [supposedly] get up to.
-
What, you can see our posts? Oh dear. I thought Fred's cloak of invisibilty would reach over our conversations. Oh dear.
I'll use my super-dooper warp powered intrinsic hiding device now. Can you read the following?
This should fade away and

It disappeared! Wow, I wish I had one of those warp powered intrinsic hiding devices, could come in handy somehow...
-
It's OK Fred, they can't hear us.
Now, where were we? Oh yes. About Person 264... Yes, that's right. He's completely...
Hang on. The batteries have run out. Let me just swap them.
There. Now about Person 264
-
I agree! Person264 IS
-
is what, is what! by the way I can't get the cheat codes to work, pressing ` doesnt seem to do anything
-
Hi P264,
The character to enter cheat codes is ~ (the tilde), according to Captain’s Journal.
I have not tested it, as I find the use of cheats morally and ethically reprehensible.

Marty

Hi mvsmith,
Thanks for telling me, I assume you press shift to get it (on my keyboard it is above the hash#~). I press it in game and then type fly but it doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe the duck's head is too heavy and it doesn't sink because of the rubber band. I typed in lookup but all it did was pause the game. Off to try again now. Sorry if you don't approve, but I find it quite interesting, what with my simple mind n all
-
Yes, if you have a UK layout keboard, shift # should give you ~.
Of course, the best cheat codes to enter these (must type the entire sequence exactly for it to work): ~, H, q, q, w, e
-
On my keyboard it is the top (shifted) character on the key above the Tab key—the leftmost key on the top row, left of the 1/! Key.
I have just confirmed that ~sink and ~fly both work on Titanic in free-roam. Sinking takes a long time.

But it can be spotted early if you are in port-starboard view looking closely at the rudder!
-
That's a shame, it doesn't seem to work on my computer, ~fly has absolutely no effect at all along with the others
-
I'm not near my PC at the moment (It's in the UK, I'm in Hollan, so I can't quite reach from here), but try using the
¬
key instead. (Shift and the key on the top left of the keyboard, next to the 1 key).
So ¬fly might do it.
-
I said `because I have a US keyboard. Try not using shift when pressing the ~ key.
-
Hello,
Doesn't "Alt+126" not work to get the tilde, replacing the ~ key ? I think the keyboard should send the correct key.
Regards,
Luc
-
i cant get to the cheat menu
-
i cant get to the cheat menu
There isn't a cheat menu, you just type it.
-
is the process like this for american keyboards:
step one: hit the ~ button for menu with the shift
step two; enter the code you want
final step: hit enter to submit and enjoy
is that right?
-
To arm the cheat codes, press the ~ key while you are in the Main Menu. That is the shifted ` key to the left of the 1 key on a US keyboard.
-
before playing a mission or free roaming
-
Ì found you can hit ~ at any time at all.
-
if anyone saw the codes panel can you get a picture of it with your handheld camera to let us see it?
-
I have two questions. WHat is the Captains Journal and i cant seem to be able to make this work. Help?
-
The Captain’s Journal is the booklet included with the Collector’s Edition DVD.

For Easter eggs, you just type the words. Some characters may have meaning in the GUI, type the character a second time to stop whatever action it has started.

That should explain it. :)
-
well i don't have it sooooooo ??? but hanks anyway
-
If you really want it buy it, if you don't want to have to buy it just to get the journal then you'll have to just put up with it I suppose. :)
-
I discovered a new cheat code. The pics explain it:
Before:
After entering code:
Hit the ~ key and enter "ocean"(minus the quotes) and the ocean will vanish or reappear.(as explained in the pics.)
-
:o
Wher...whe...where did all of the water go looks more like a glitch to me
-
It Ain't a glitch. Try the code yourself,
~ > Ocean
It worked for me.
-
i don't get whats the difference
-
Look Closely at this pic of the bottom pic:
The picture right here show the anchor end is visible of both RJ4 and Pioneer. The Lower Hull of the Sherpa is visible. All are circled.
