Title: Ship Simulator Great Lakes Edition
Post by: Tugboatkid on November 03, 2008, 13:17:28
I think that shipsim should make a great lakes version of the game, some of the vessels included should be:
Edmund Fitzgerald, Roger Blough, Edward L. Ryerson, Algosteel, Joseph L. Block. There would be all other sorts of things to do also, like: operate a hullet unloader, operate an ore dock, walk mode on all ships and
sail from dusk til dawn.

                                    your thoughts.

Go and make it then... VSTEP is making SS09 at the moment so doesn't have the time to make a great lakes edition...

But, I have just spent some time alongside of Lake Ontario, recording radio sounds. I may release that later.

I guess that someone could produce a mission using one of the Ocean environments and call it "Lake Ontario Mission". With some of the inshore takers and freight vessels and the radio sounds, it might be quite realistic.

But there wouldn't be any ports, of couse.

That really sounds like fun!! Why not just stick with North Atlantic, everyone knows where that is and you can use Ducky there too!!

The Great Lakes is very busy with ships, so I don't see why it shouldn't be an Edition.

its a good idea, but very few people know about them, and VSTEP is a european company, doubt you'll see this edition.

well atleast put some canadian ports in such as halifax, NB, st. johns NFLD, etc, etc
i think all canadians on the ss08 forum r with me whan i say that is isnt fair that we dont have one of our own ports in the game.

Yeah. In Copenhagen next to the waterside now, but no radio noise at all. Very quiet.

Still, going down to Rotterdam on Sunday for a few days. Hope to get some good recordings there. Then off to Utrecht then Stockholm the following week.

Alaska 737-800.

My dad built the plane. :) Well actually, he helped build the plane. :p

I'll be back next summer probably take the same flight path.

I have video too:

I thought the coastline and the airfield in the first shot looked familiar, I think I know that from FS2004 and FS9, in which I usually flew from Meigs field. This is a bit further North though, I am pretty sure you were just about over Milwaukee there, see google Earth shot aswell (different season when that image was take, but the airfield's shape is clear enough to match up). So that'll be Lake Michigan then.

Hello? VSTEP added in New York and San Franciso to SS08, that's in North America.  And the Great Lakes is one of the busiest ports in the world.  They should add the Great Lakes, they're like inland seas.

When I went from Toronto to Ontario last week, I was aware that Lake Ontario is larger than the English Channel, of which the Solent is a small part.

So yes, it is technically feasible. The lakes are immense.

Surely the VStep are not expected to model the whole world, just so that someone can have their own pet playground.

There has been a lot of discussion about environments elsewhere in this forum and this discussion should surely continue in the main thread?

Here are a few.  I believe both steamship, and "seagoing" folks would enjoy the ship handling.  Lots of tight spots..and a great variety of traffic.  With the skills here.. I believe this would be GREAT!  If not, how about the Suez or Kiel Canals?  Ship's Monthly magazine just recently feature the Great Lakes

I hope you enjoy the Pic's!!

Galen

I assume they dredge that canal often. Looks like it would be very shallow if they did not.

Yes, dredging is an ongoing thing.   Here are a few I took of the Mississagi, outbound on the Saginaw River in July, passing through the Lake States Railway swing bridge.  Hope you enjoy!

Do they dredge the rock cut?

I think its a good idea, unlike most people who think these are only knee deep ponds that we use for "playgrounds" I have not been to any European ports so I don't know how difficult it is to navigate them. The lakes have many challenges, from strong currents, to narrow rivers with bridges, to extremely narrow rivers with  tight turns. There are also locks and tight channels. Now a 1000ft boat in Rotterdam needs how many tugs? The 1000ft ore carriers navigate without the need of tugs. its only an idea, I'm sure flight sim didn't have the full world available at first.

Heres some shots of the mail boat in Detroit.

I suppose doing the Great Lakes would be a huge amount of work. Basicly I think the most interesting part (and scenic) is from Montreal through the seaway into the first lake (Ontario if I recall correctly). In my opinion this would only make sense if we can get the locks working.
Next the Welland canal with even more locks is not as nice a scenery but would get you into the second lake.

Our ships (altough not the Jumbo Javelin (she's too big)) regulary go all the way upto Duluth and Thunderbay for the refinery equipment used on the oilfields and tar-sands.

Jumbo Vision is in Duluth as we speak...  Wonderful vessels.  I greatly enjoy the Jumbo Javelin in SS08.  You folks at SS and Jumbo did a GREAT thing providing us with it.  I will always be a customer here!

I'd fully agree with you as I live along this section of the great lakes. I've seen a couple of your ships go through, however I can't seen to recall the name of the ship.

Time to reopen the discussion on a Great Lakes Edition or Ad on.   hmmmm... most of north American users are probably NOT in NY or San fransisco  but quite a few, as well as our canadian friends have greater familiarity and interest in the Great Lakes.  I'd keep it in mind.

Im in Missouri, with not major water systems (except rivers, but im in the southwest corner of boring-ness), but a Great Lakes addon would be pretty sweet. It would take alot of work, but It would be very cool

Nice pics!!  I live south of Lake Ontario, and if I want to do the Great Lakes, I have to go to (gulp) Virtual Sailor and use their Great Lakes addon.....not my favorite selection (VS), but it's better than not being able to at all.

VS leaves a lot to be desired when you put it up against either SSE or SS 08...ship handling is pretty....unusual, but again, if you want to sail the Lakes, then that's about your only choice....costs $30 (US) to d/load from their site.  The Lakes addon is a free d/load as are a couple of Lake Boats.
