Try to avoid those nasty download sites if there is a website for the product itself, those are always the better choice in my opinion.

I downloaded Winrar from somewhere, and got a virus. Couldn't do anything about it.

Clogged up the internet and Norton didn't recognise it :P

Yahoo! search engine is actually better than Google in my opinion. With Yahoo!, when you search for something it puts a red flag next to any search result that contains a harmful download. I'd reccomend using Google for Images only, but search using Yahoo! when looking for downloads.

Is that true because I've used Google for a lot of things and I haven't got a virus (well except for one time when I searched up an image and I got a virus.)

Yes it is true. I think it's better to know that your downloads are safe before you do something silly and half destroy your PC.

What happened?

It didn't get on to the main PC if you know what i mean, just when I went on the web message came up saying their were harmful viruses and download protection now. That was the virus i think.

I don't have any anti-virus or firewalls, I am just smart about it. I run a scan once a month, maybe... Just don't download things you don't know about. If you go to an image and it wants you to download it, something is fishy, you should be able to view an image via your browser...

The only virus I have every had was on my first computer when I was 8 years old....

More likely is that your PC is infested with all sorts of things you simply don't know about.

It is not possible to avoid the spyware, trojans, viruses, cookie malware and so on unless you only visit Creators Forum, Ship Simulator, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft and BBC.

The moment you stray oustide of the really good guys, you will be infected at some level. Absolutely guaranteed.

No amount of protesting will shake me from this view. I have been active in antiviral software for many years. Every time someone claims that they don't have antiviral software because they are "special" in some way, it turns out that they are infested.

I just ran a scan with 3 different anti-spyware and anti-virus software. All of them found nothing...

Lucky you... Since there's a bout a 99.9999999999% chance of getting some when you are surfing online.. You must be in that small group of really special people then.. hehe..  ;D

Seriously, my software (automatic scans on preset intervals, several programs) usually finds/kills/quarantines/immunizes some small stuff and the big stuff is usually caught and annihilated right away.

You can indeed not prevent it completely, it's just so common that everyone at one point (or rather a lot of points) will get some on his pc, wether he/she knows it or not, and even a scan with various programs can't give you a 100% guarantee, of course. I've had suspicions of being infected once (weird pc behaviour) and 4 different programs found nothing, yet the 5th did.. so who knows...

Yep, I'd bet money on it, even though I don't bet.

The benefit of not having antivirus software is that you don't know how infected your PC is....

my antivirus scans weekly on mondays at 8pm and it finds a tracking cookie every time, like everyone says. No one is "special" enough to not get a virus, tracking stuff, spyware something at some point in time. Unless you visit those few sites only like terry said, which i know theres no one here that just visits that. So trust me, wether you know it or not you've got something. :P

Guys, After what happened (ANd i still have that virus) I am never going to get winrar. I don't care where i download it. Downloads dot com even said that they were free of all that nasty stuff. They are all liars. None of them can be trusted.

The ability to ZIP and un-ZIP files is built into XP and Vista, and does not require any other software. For Ship Simulator purposes, there is really no reason to bother with RAR.

Well Marty, When i first try to download the javelin, I tried to unzip the file. But it says "Invalid .zip file" And couldn't unzip it. I got Winrar because someone suggested that i needed it. And it went fine. Explain please.

Isn't your PC at risk of contracting a virus?

Well, I guess I'll use Yahoo! for downloads...better to be safe than sorry.
