Ahoy minime,
This great Steam Passenger Vessel was doomed to be scrapped. After a lot of troubles (including removing of all the Asbestos) she was rescued from the blowtorch, towed to Rotterdam and got her final berth as a Hotel/Conference/Museum ship. And 'cause her engines wern't in operational order she needed all those tugs to berth her.
BTW, not all the tugs are really towing, a lot are only there to show their respect to the Big R.
Regards
Aad

oh, I'm really happy they saved that beutyful ship

Ahoy matt,
Don't know about the QM I, but the Big R will be, after time, at the moment they are busy to replace the davits and life-boats. They where removed for saftety-reasons (sounds stupid) during the big haul. That's why You can't see them on that panoramic pic's. (BTW, this pic (see attachment) is my favorite.

Aad

Ahoy to you too, Aad
Thank you for sharing these pictures. A Dutch treat for those who remeber that recreation in time.
As proud as we should be of this monument, a tear is blinking in the corner of our eyes, seeing the end.
vr, gr. / kind regards Erik

Ahoy Marty,
I'm (almost) sure that the meaning of the word LEKKO (the magazine title) is known to You. To all others:
It's a Dutch/German Slang for the British/American Tugboat command for Let Go (all towlines)
Regards
Aad

almost like the let go tugs option on the towline telemotor on titanic, the great british/irish ship of 1912

The docking/manuvering telegraph, ah, yes :)
Do you know what any of the other commands on it do? ;D
-

I think you'll find both are a VERY common sight on the New Waterway leading upto and around Rotterdam ;)
If you look in the pic in the first post, Stena Trader and Britannica are docked in the background, so that's Europoort. The PoR is out of the picture to the left.

Nice too see her stil alive ;D

Hi Aad,
Do the Dutch TV commercials say LEKKO my EGGO?
That’s a very good magazine; I’ve been a subscriber for some time. I recommend it to anyone interested in tugs and the towing/offshore/heavy-lift industries. There are a lot of great photographs and plan drawings in each issue.
The centerfold—Miss July—is Nan Hai Jiu 101, a 20,000 hp, 22 kt China Rescue boat. She’s a beauty, and would make a great addition to the SS fleet.
The US representative of LEKKO, Al Lindner, happens to live across the Columbia from me in Brush Prairie, Washington. His email is lekkousa@msn.com (http://lekkousa@msn.com) for anyone here.
Kind regards,
Marty

Ahoy Marty,
Sorry for the delay. Maybe Terry told You 'bout my pc-problems? Anyhow, I have no idea 'bout the tv-commercials at all. At the first sight of that kind of stuff I switch to another channel. I HATE COM's >:(

Hi Aad,
In the US, Eggo is a brand of frozen waffle that one can pop into the toaster. TV commercials show two people reaching for the same package in the market freezer and saying “leggo my Eggo!â€
I never use that product; I eat only waffles imported from Belgium.

Marty

where was the ss rotterdam when gone from rotterdam?
-
It is a shame ofcourse that after that major rebuild, a big dent was made near the stern. That will be very hard to bump out again, considering the thickness of the steel. :-\

That would be a job for Bondo.

Who's fault was that? And wasn't the SS Rotterdam blue before?

Lovely slideshow, thank you for sharing!

Very nice on the slideshow. Thank you for sharing it with us. I am pleased about this ship being saved. I took my first cruise on this ship way back in 1977 when it was sailing the New York - Bermuda - Nassau circuit on a 7 day cycle. It did have a blue hull then. That was when it Holland America Cruises. I think the gray hull is the original Holland America Line color scheme. Now this is a ship that really should be in Ship Sim.
