This makes me wonder :'(
http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/features/display.var.2441232.0.Is_the_world_about_to_go_out_with_a_bang.php
Our world could possably be in danger! :-\ although, I've just looked into that Big Bang thing a bit more, aperently, it will be harmless, since there is no way they could/can produce the amount of energy in the big bang, if that theory is correct. However, the courts still have to make a decision to let this go ahead.
-
Just because it turns on on Wednesday doesn't mean anything is going to happen. They're just firing a proton round one way I think and it wont even be at full power. It is going to take at least 2 months for them to actually align the protons up so they actually hit each other. They're hoping to find stuff like the Higgs Boson and other hypothetical particles, and it might even make time travel possible when it goes full power. The huge energies created by smashing the particles together could, some scientists think, warp spacetime so much that it would go crazy and allow people to come from the future (they wouldn't be able to get back though I don't think). Its that same with the mini black holes idea, 14Tev of energy (Gev or Tev?) in a space the size of a proton. Big Bang "wop" oh dear black hole.
-
Seems a bit pathetic to me.
-
Well, I have heard talk about this. The consequence is if the Eruopeans fire this thing wrong, the whole world is going to explode. I am not a dare devil, so I say no ;D.
Anyway, relating to the big bang stated in the article, it says that the magority of scientists disagree, so that is a good thing ;). Don't beleive that since a few think that, it is true, because the majority really matters on a final descion.
-
when the suns burns out in billions of years, that will be the end of our world.
-
But we won't be alive, so it wont be our problem ;D ;D ;D ;D!
-
I don't know Time stopped in Massachusetts Last night!
The TV froze the computer froze the clocks froze my watch froze and no cars went by. It was like this for 11 minutes. It was kind of creepy. :-\

EMP. Watch for tripods coming from underground!

The only scary part of that I can relate to is everything freezing. Cars never go by in me neighborhood. I live in a nice quiet community. That way, when we hear an alarm go off in the middle of the night, everyone calls the police ;D.

Like your signature says, you aren't making any sence ??? ;D.
-
The world is NOT going to go out simply because someone fires a particle at a very low energy. There are far more energetic particles hitting me as I write this.
And theyre hitting you as you read this.
And hae been zipping around since time began.
Sleep soundly in your beds. Just some newspapers trying to sell copy.
-
Maybe Terry will fly in and save us all
-
Probably not ;D.
-
I'm surprised the US isn't sending over any Hornets or B2's. :s
-
A what of b2's? Isint that the stealth bomber?
-
A what of b2's? Isint that the stealth bomber?
Yes, and the F/A-18 Hornet is a fighter.
B2 has guided bombs, Hornet has laser guided missles.
-
Ohh. And why are you suprised that we havent sent out bombers?
-
Ohh. And why are you suprised that we havent sent out bombers?
Because I am sure the US finds this as a threat of life. We take anything out that could harm us. We have carriers near Europe, just send one out and put there bit project a little behind schedule.
-
Well, they havent gotten premission to do it. They can't just fire a particle generator gun.. thing because it could blow up the world.
-
Well, they havent gotten premission to do it. They can't just fire a particle generator gun.. thing because it could blow up the world.
Yes they can, the goverment said they can, did you not read the article?
-
Yes yes, I read it. I just diddn't know that you could blow up the world if the govornment said so, thats all ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D.
-
Your Government is a sponsor in the project. A little bit of research would tell you that:
- The people working on this each have an IQ that exceeds most people here
- The people working on the project are learned scientists and know exactly what they're doing
- The people working on the project know far more than whatever half-wit wrote the scare-mongering article you've read
- The people working on the project are American as well as European, British, Japanese and so on
- The project is co-sponsored by your own Government, Austin
- There is no way any of the doom and gloom secenarios will come to pass
- If you believe in the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny, then you might want to place some importance on these stupid reports
I'll also tell you that I know some of the people working on this project. At least two of them post on this forum from time to time. There are others on this forum who know people on the team as well.
I strongly suggest that you stop your warlike talk, Austin. I really don't want to have to lock this thread and issue warnings, etc.
To summarise:
The reports you have read are:
(a)
incorrect
(b)
scaremongering
(c)
not even any use as toilet paper afterwards
-
I am glad I am not in trouble ;D. I beleive you completely professor, since you are a professor and you seem to know what you are talking about ::) ;D.
-
Maybe thats because he is working on that experiment :o haha :D
-

Ever seen War of the Worlds (new one)?
-
Maybe thats because he is working on that experiment :o haha :D
No, I don't think so. Well.... maybe ;D.
Ever seen War of the Worlds (new one)?
No. What worlds are in the movie ;D?
-
If you've ever read the book, it was fought in the area where I lived and went to school.
One of the books we studied in English Literature classes was War of The Worlds by dear old H. G.
It was delightful when we read about the Martians destroying Woking, since that was where the school was located...
-
No, I don't think so. Well.... maybe ;D.
No. What worlds are in the movie ;D?
Earth, and Freds Evil Place, and the Brains of Terth. (Terry)
-
Or it was fought between Martians, the English and flu germs.
-
And Orson caused quite a stir with his radio show.. ;)
-
Earth, and Freds Evil Place, and the Brains of Terth. (Terry)
Evil place ey? Hmm, I might want to visit this evil place of which you speak ;D.
-
Perhaps you live there already, but don't yet realise it...
-

Where did you get my ex wife's address from???
Russ K
-
Your ex-wife lives at the same address as my ex-wife's mother? Wow!
-
Or it was fought between Martians, the English and flu germs.
Actually, Terry, it was fought between the Martians, the Jerseyites—ours, not yours—and a virus, specifically the Secaucus Crud. Ask your better half.
The LZ was about 10 miles NE of Trenton—site of another epic battle where we beat the… never mind.
-
Depends whether you're talking Radio or Book.....
The radio program is legendary even here. I've listened to a recording a few years back.
In the book, I loved the way the Martians blew up my school.
-
Back to the topic of the world "ending" and the LHC, I have to admit that it has caused quite a stir at my school. Everyone seems to think that the world will end tomorrow and I bet the science department are happy with everyone that teensy bit more interested in science. It's great advertising.
-
Happy BIG BANG everyone! :D :D
(sorry but some people like me laugh themselves of the chair by reading stuff like that) ;)
I think I'm more afraid for a new cold war between US and Russia if it will become a 2nd reality in the human history... ::)
-
Well, if we all wake up dead tomorrow, I think many people will blame me. ???
-
Terry are you part of/going to be part of if we still exist the link up thing that might be needed for the huge amount of data that is going to come from the LHC?
-
Well, tomorrow is the moment of truth, chances are, we will be fine, if not, it was nice knowing you all (being serious for once there).
Jack.
-
When will this happen in GMT, UTC time...or what? Just to make sure that I get the Norwegian time ;D
-
The world has ended about 4 times in the last 10 or so years, i don't see why this time it sould be different. If anything goes wrong it is under ground so damage will be minimal because i don't think the actual thing they are doing will be as powerful as the origional big bang... but just in case... Bye bye everyone :P its a shame the human race didn't have much of a innings.
-
I think it's 7:30 GMT. That's when the BBC radio 4 program about it starts. Unless they turn it on before and sneakily destroy us while we aren't looking.
Did people worry about the world ending when the last big collider was built?
-
Black Hole! :D :D :D :D
-
LOL J3nsen ;D The time and the light will be stretched so hard... But what I have seen on movies it's some kind of time travel. So we may just end up back to the time when this Earth had this creature as it's leader.. :P
(http://www.calacademy.org/exhibits/dinos/images/field_guide_trex.jpg)
or much better...the stone age ::)
Proud to be a Viking ;D
-
::)
-
We can't travel back in time (cos there would be nothing there to appear in), but people could travel back in time to when we first start the LHC if it warps spacetime enough.
-
I think that the worry that people have is that they think that a molecular level black hole (if produced) would sink to the centre of the earth and gradually swallow the earth up, atom by atom.
A reasonable concern. Ray Bradbury wrote a "Golden Age" science fiction story about that happening on Mars, I think.
BUT,
(1)
The particle accelerator doesn't have even a part of a bit of a small portion of a fraction of what is needed, energy-wise.
(2)
Black holes have a life-time related to their mass. With such a tiny mass, any black hole would radiate out of existence in such a short time that the systems might not even notice it. (Black holes are fuzzy and have no hair). The engergy given out would be about the same as the collision put in when creating it.
-
I just try to focus on the clock here... ;D
Sooner or later it will be "bedtime" ::)
-
Here are some interesting NatGeo articles I found ..

I'm still alive...strange :P
-
Have we escaped death? or are we still waiting.....I got NO sleep last night. Although, i did watch the news last night about the Collider, and they did say that the black hole theory is a load of rubbish.
Jack.
-
this is EPIC,truly EPIC! would b cool if the earth exploded, ive always wanted to go to space :P relax everybody look on te bright side of things,if it goes wrong it creates a black hole gobbling up the planet along with us and we suffer a slow and painful death :P OR, if it goesa right then we can go along our usual days
-
MWAHAHHAHA Its the Final Countdown!!!! HAHAHA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n-TKfSetAE
-
They just fired it up this time. After two weeks the real experiment starts (the collision).
And the amount of energy it creates is so small that the impact of it will be microscopic compared to the energy that was released during the big bang (or when God made his first -fart- :) )
-

No sleep? :P You must be worried, i dropped pretty quick :D :P
-
No-one disappeared up their own paradox?
Good. Fuss over nothing, then. ;D
-
I just hope a little black pea won't come drifting through my kitchen someday and swallow my Marmite..(or my kitchen :)
-
Marmite is composed entirely of inert neutrinos.
-
Very reassuring Terry, I just wish they had built one of these with the spare parts..
An Omega 13.. ;D
-
Is THAT where I left it?
I've been looking everywhere for it. It slipped the lead and ran off last week.
-
Yep, that's where you left it..these guys would like to thank you for that.. ;D
-
Yes, since the Toolman left, I am their God.
-
we are alive im glad that the LHC didnt form a black hole yet.
-
Don't hold your breath..they haven't started to bang yet.. ;)
-
Difficult to see what all the fuss was about really. Everyone should have listened to Professor Hawkins
-
they say it could take up to 4 months to get it fully working
-
I WANT MARMITE. I wish i could get it. lol.
-
I WANT MARMITE. I wish i could get it. lol.
Congrats, you've just one random post of the week ;D
-
Hi Firestar.
Marmite is of course a pan-thread topic.
See here for details, but please read all posts carefully. You will be examined on your understanding later.
