when a ship sinks, a vortex is apparently created which sucks people and objects close enough down.

Hey Trains,

I have heard of this many, many times BUT Mythbusters tested this and it does NOT occur! :o

it didn't occur with the tug but it did with a 300 pound box.

So the bit in the titanic film where they get sucked under is caused by vortex effect

That's what they said. A chef (or Butler) was on the real thing. He says he rode the ships stern all the way down and simply stepped off when she went under, feeling no suction. He was drunk at the time though  ::)

By the way, this same guy can be seen in the Titanic film.
