Title: A build-a-ship kit from Smithyards!
Post by: danny on April 06, 2012, 01:47:48

Ladies, gentalmen, spambots,
I Present to you a very special treat from Smithyards... A build-a-ship kit! The build-a-ship kit has been released as the yard is currently going a-mile-a-minute developing kittyhawk assets, and as a result we don't have any free time or men to complete this vessel, so, we've pulled the deck hatches off to give you guys a "clean slate" so you can turn her into whatever you want!

There are, however, some rules which you MUST obey. Failure to do so may result in very bad things happening...

!!!BY DOWNLOADING THIS VESSEL YOU AGREE TO THE POINTS ABOVE!!!
I might tweak the model a bit if I get a spare moment, if I do I'll post the updated version in this post.

So, with that out of the way, have fun - and if you have any questions, either post below OR pm me :)

I'd also really appreciate it if you posted a few pictures of your work below ;)

This space is taken - I'll use it to post other shipbuilding tips and tutorials if people want them ;)

the model is great, but I can't seem to paint it. :-\

Its grouped - if you press "Ctrl+A" then right click on the model and select "explode" you should be able to paint it, although you might have to do it a few times as theres several different groups ;)
If that still doesn't work let me know and I'll upload a ungrouped version :)

your boat is a bit small... it would fit into my 40ft container

"The smaller the model the smaller the filesize"

All my boats are full scale then  ;D

If I were you, I'd build the ship to a scale of 1:50 or maybe 1:25, so you can have some diskspace left for things other than ships

surely though, the size of the model don't make much difference - its the detail that changes, the units would surely be arbitrary

No, the size DOES matter, because the bigger the vessel, the more polygons that are needed to make it, and the more polygons in the model, the bigger the filesize will be.

Are you sure...?

a large square will have two polygons surely, the same as a small square?

Sketchup is strange
Also, this ship was built from plans, which is why its so small...

Actually, sketchup isn't strange at all...

The mesh itself does not change, if you change the scale. your triangles that make up the mesh are just bigger, but that's all relative anyway, that doesn't matter too much. The geometry stays exactly the same and so should the file size. I've never ever noticed any difference between scaling something up, or down, after first creating it..

And I make lotsa backup copies, and side by side, between a smaller one and a scaled up one, it's just the same.. I just took a model of mine and made it almost 800% of its former size.. and it went up by 2kb..  and then I made it even bigger, and the next save, it went down again, with also a few more kb, to even a kb less than the original size. So those few kb can be discarded as far as I am concerned.  :P

So I'm sorry, but it would seem you're wrong about that one. GSU is just normal.  ;D

Well, my sketchup increases the filesize if I make it bigger

Then yours IS strange..   :P

But it still doesn't alter the mesh though, just because there's a few different numbers somewhere in the file telling software what the scale is. That difference might be a few kb too, after all it's data inside the file.

But mesh wise, it stays the same. And 2kb more in an 800% increase in size..  yeah, granted, that's bigger.. but I think I can spare the HD space on that.  ;D

If you can't spare 2kb of HDD space then I think you might have to have a MAJOR cleanout

Are there any other "build-a-ship" kits people would like? or any assets that you might find useful? LET ME KNOW BELOW!

haha, pretty much, yes.

I like what you're doing with this btw... but i kinda get my kicks from making all my stuff myself.  :)

But it is a nice way of getting a new modeler on their way, I suppose.
