Title: Cutter manouvering
Post by: Björn Holm on August 29, 2010, 21:31:33
Hello

There is a azipod on the cutter i assume from the control, is it fwd or aft?

I made a test in Dover, but it seems to be no power at all in the thruster, anyone else having that problem?

I think that there are a lot of improvments in SSE, but also a lot of improvements to be made.
However, i am looking forward to see the way the program develop in the nearest weeks/months.

Hi Björn,

What's your Speed Over Ground (SOG) when you operate the thruster? Thrusters have the tendency to be useless over 3-4 knts  ;)

Hello Ballast

Speed was zero and alongside just as a reference for testing since i thougth that Ezperansas thruster was little slow  ;D

Gentlemen,

The azimuth thruster on cutter does work, both to turn her and to drive her fwd/back. In turning, the thruster seemed to be about under the helipad, but I didn’t spend much time testing.

The developer in charge of ship dynamics has told me that it is an eclipsable* bow thruster capable of driving the cutter forward at 5 knots, and that the control needs some work.

The ship is modeled after a Hamilton class 378-foot High Endurance cutter built for the United States Coast Guard. First in class was commissioned in 1967. Aside from some ice breakers, these 12 cutters are the largest in USCG inventory.

*Pardon my French: Retractable like the Javelin’s

Hello

I tried in a mission and it worked!

I think it behaivs strange, if you use it ahead, ship goes ahead, but if you put it to port, bow goes to starboard

whats the logic i miss  ;D

The operation of the control needs to be fixed. There was no logic for you to miss.

So when is this going to be fixed? I started a mission last night and it drove me crazy trying to figure out this control???

It is possible to figure out the vagaries of that thruster if you spend some time in an open space experimenting in an organized manner. That is something that should be done with every ship by anyone who is serious about operating ships in a seamanlike manner.

Hi Salty,
What happens when you try to use the cutter in free roam?
Regards,
Marty

Sorry, I had no secondary input commands. Most likely because I was playing in a new Profile..
After assigning them again, it all works fine now.. :)

I can assure you that the way this thruster works would never be approved by a decent class society, so dont talk about seamanship with a faulty manouvre....

Hi Björn,

Indeed, if the Azipod is located near the cutter's bow, the behaviour seems strange. I've asked the question to the developpers, I'll add their answer about that.

Luc said that the bow thruster needed to be redone; it was completely fouled up (see my earliest post).
It is still usable as is if you take the trouble to experiment before you really need it. For one thing, the direction of thrust as indicated by the azimuth of the handle is opposite to what it should be for a bow thruster.
The control is entirely missing from the bridge.

But how do I move sideways with the thruster of the US Coastguard Cutter?

It's more like an extendable azimuth thruster, like on Jumbo Javelin, than a normal bowthruster..
You can find it in the virtual controls, and use the mouse to control it..
