Hi!
I wonder how big SSE to download. in this Forum I have heard 5 GB. If it's true is SSE very big and take long time to download. Or VSTEP can compress it to a ZIP-file, but then it is probably not the smaller 4 GB. Not so small...
Do anyone know the size of SSE? It determines entirely whether I should download it or order boxed version of the game.

Personally I think you should buy it on a Disk because then it will be easier to install and you will have a hard copy of the program.

How much more expensive it becomes to pre-order the boxed version than to download?
The real question: How large is the file?

I might be wrong, but I can't see it differing that much from Ship Sim 08 or any other games that you've downloaded online before. If you have a good connection I can't see it being much of a problem.
I'm sure V-STEP have kept this in mind :)
Jack.

OK, so the file isn't bigger than SS08?

Hi again Markus,
I'm suggesting that SS08 will probably be of a similar size to SSE. I can't see it differing that much. But please don't quote me!
So yes...it'll probably be a similar size to SS08 I think. (And if it isn't, I can't see there being a great difference...be it in time taken to download, or file size. Besides, another 10-15 minutes isn't going to do any harm!)
Kind Regards,
Jack.

Hi Markus,
the download version of Extremes won't probably be smaller than SS08. I'd say probably a bit more, as there is new content.
Anyway, the file will undoubtely be several gigas to download. If your internet line is good enough to download some gigas, wether it's 4 or 5 doesn't change a lot ...
About the disk version been easier to install and letting you keep a hard copy, I don't really see the point here - both versions are equally easy to install, and you still can burn on a DVD the downloaded file.
The real advantage of the boxed version ... is the box and the materiel it contains :)
The advantage of the download version .... is that you'll be able to sail Extremes a few days sooner.
I imagine there might be a slight difference in the pricing (the download version beeing probably a little cheaper than the box one - at least you have no shipping cost).
Regards,
Denis

Hi Denis!
I have just done a internet connection test (with the swedish program "TPTEST 5.0"). The download-speed was 1,93 Mbit/s (1,93 Mbit/second).
1 GB = 1024 MB
1 MB = 8 Mbit
1 GB = 8192 Mbit
8192 Mbit * 4 (that's 1 GB*4=4GB) = 32768 Mbit
32768 Mbit / 1,93 Mbit/s (my connection-speed) = 16978,238341968911917098445595855 seconds
16978,238341968911917098445595855 seconds is about 4,71 hours.
To download a file with "Turbo-3G+" (faster than 3G and Turbo-3G) that is 4 GB takes about 4,71 hours.
I will take same tests tomorrow and see, but I think it's no bigger different.

Markus,
I agree with the beginning of your calculation.
I just don't agree with the end, but maybe time in Sweden is not the same than in France, due to arctic circle or midnight sun ! (please do not take it as an offense, it's pure humour ;) ) !
One hour = 60 minutes = 60x60 (3600) seconds , and not 1440 which is the value you appear to have used !
Which means you should download your 4 GB in 16978 / 3600 = 4,71 hours - a bit less than 5 hours
Oh, and btw, you could have had the same result quickly with this simple but efficient calculator :
http://www.numion.com/calculators/time.html
Besides of all that, we are talking about theory here. Effectively, if you use a 3G data connection, I imagine you might have a very variable download rate, and probably some deconnexions :(

Hi Denis!
Oh, sorry, I should know that 60x60=3600. Sorry, my mistake. Yes, and 5 h isn't so long time. But it's a BIG file. SS08 was (or may I say "is") 666 MB, and SS08.exe wasn't in ZIP!
Thanks for your calculator. I made a test on the site and here are the results:
http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/ShowMeasurement.php?ID=74,955,576
Not so big difference from 1,9 Mbit/s...
No, my connection is very stable. But on the nights and holidays can Internet be very slow. It can be 0,5 Mbit/s...
And the joke: It's not funny!! (grr)
/Markus
-
I said it was a joke ... not it was gonna to be a fun one ;D
Anyway, I took the 4Gb size because you mentionned it, but I don't know how big it will be. I did not even checked the size of SS08 release, nor the size of extremes beta :)
I definitely think it will be totally accessible for you to download the release.

Haha, :D
Yes, 4-5 hours...
I hope you are right ;)

Another benefit with the downloaded version is that you can download it again in the future, or put it onto a DVD for backup.
If your boxed DVD breaks you have to buy a new one.
-
If your boxed DVD breaks you have to buy a new one.
Or make a safety-copy, strictly for personal use.

So I see that we're thinking around 4-5 hours for the download version. The full game takes up 3.5 GB of hard drive space. If I can remember right, when I got the download version of Trainz Simulator 2009(I know it's not Ship Sim related) the game needed about 10 GB free and the download to get the exe file, it was 2.5 GB. So it all depends on how Vstep desides to release the download version (if this all makes sense)
-
Why not make this a contest? ;)
I say 4,7 GB and whoever is the nearest gets...
A cookie!! ;D

One thing perhaps to keep in mind, when downloading such a large file, is to turn off your screensaver.
If it activates during download, it could interrupt the connection.. :)
-
i think its 5gb for the game
-
I say 5-7, maybe similar to the 7GB's StarCraft2 takes, took me about 20 hours to download. Extremes seems to be a larger game, a advanced wave system(not sure if this might take up more space) more ships and environments as mentioned before. Of coarse I could newer be sure of this, just a rough guess, based from my very little knowledge of games and how they work.
-
If it's going to take 20 hours to download, I might as well get the boxed version! Haha

You're right!
By the way, my download-speed was 4,3 Mbit/s for few seconds ago...
/M
(Thanks for all answers! And I think 4 GB (if the file is in ZIP) to about 6-7 GB (not in ZIP)

I just checked mine. 5.88MB/S.
Is that decent?
Jack.

If your download-speed is 5.88 MB/s it's very fast! You can download a file on 4 GB in 11,60997732426303854875283446712 minutes About 8x faster than mine.
But if you mean Mbit, you must take 11 minutes*8 (1 byte=8 bits)= 88 minutes

Oh, sorry. I forget to ask what program you use, so I do that now instead. :-[

Hi All
we can't really say how big the file will be before the game are finish

I doubt the size of the download version (which will certainly be in a zipped format, no doubt about this) will exceed (or even reach) 4gb. I would more probably bet on a 1,5 or 2 gb file size.
And J4ck, 5.88 MB/S (which means 5.88 MBytes / second, that makes 47.04 Mbits / second), will be far more than decent :)
I think you made a mistake and your line is 5.88 Mb/s, not 5.88 MB/s though. (1 MB = 1 Megabyte = 8 Mb = 8 Megabits). Which would be quite decent enough too :)

Hi Denis - Yes that was a mistake that I made! It was Mb/s.
How long would that take roughly to download, in that case ^^ (Ie Mb/s as oppose t MB/S)
Jack.

It's hard to give you an answer without knowing the main value of the equation : the size :-)

I'll download then ;D
Thanks Markus/Denis.

Lucky to have fiber :)
Sweden:

To rotterdam:

But the real question is what the server can handle per person downloading, which most likley won't be much.
