Tomorrow, after 134 shuttle launches the NASA space shuttle program will be retired. :'( Tomorrow is a day in history. Two tragedies STS-51-L, and STS-107 were terrible blows to NASA, and the crew member's families, lets all hope that doesn't happen tomorrow, right?

The first iPhone is flying on board a space shuttle ;D
-
All goes to atlantis STS 135
That moment she lands and the commander says "Wheels stopped"
A new era will have begon
-
Giving up already? Now would be a good time for Aliens to Invade the Earth for some motivation to keep it in service
-
What is the shuttle supposed to do against an alien attack, then? Observe them until they back off? :P
'Set phasers to epic fail, ..let's get em boys!' ;D
-
guys guys
Show some respect
The last space shuttle is going in space soon
There isn't anyplane for jokes anymore :'(
-
come on mate, our SETI programs have been an EPIC FAIL*
and thats all we got!well... except for the WOW! signal
for you fred,
(from independence day movie)
Nuke'em
EPIC FAIL*
ocean dream you're right
*in a booming voice
-
Respect? It's just a vehicle, and a way too expensive one at that. :P
You make it sound as if it's going to die.
There will be newer and better and cheaper methods in the future. In the private sector an exciting race is going on too, and has been for a while, we'll see much better means to get the job done.
Respect for the brave folks that fly it, those that do difficult tasks on it and on the ISS and such, and to those that perished in the line of duty, doing what they loved to do, sure, plenty of it too. But the shuttle is a machine, not much more to me. And a money guzzling, outdated program too, and it's a good thing that it is taken out of the running if you ask me. Time for something else. That's the way of everything. Old things are left behind at some point.
And if you realise what it costs to run, and how many people in America live under the 'comfortable financial limit' and how much more there is wrong with things like healthcare, education and such, then I don't think I respect a machine very much. Sure it is important to do certain types of research in zero-G circumstances, but there will be better, cheaper ways to get to the lab, trust me. ;)
And then they can spend a little of that which it used to cost, on other important things.
I wish the astronauts godspeed, and I hope everything goes smoothly. And then it's just the end of one era and the beginning of a new one.
-
i wonder what the new shuttles will look like? ??? ::)
-
i typed "New Space shuttle " on google
and i saw this

-
the first one looks more realistic than the second one
-
This topic has Richard Bronson written all over it, I have so much respect for him. He reminds me of that Move Alien Vs Predator where the the Billionaire sets off a journey in space to create a new home for humans. But Fred I do think your reply was a little harsh, just a vehicle, there is a lot more to it than just a vehicle.
-
Yawn another one of these topics, it's almost as bad as the Titanic.. Though in one respect fair enough with the Titanic.
Also, don't believe everything you read on the internet :)
-
As far as I know there are no current plans to replace the Space Shuttle with anything at the moment - the "Orion" plans (Which included going back to the moon) have all basically been scrapped. Now the Americans have to rely on Russia to get astronauts into space (now isn't that Ironic...)
Trouble is the final Space Shuttle was never up to what was originally planned, what NASA wanted was a lot more advanced then the space shuttle became, and following the two disasters, became even more limited as the Shuttle was limited to a Low Earth Orbit - even the Hubble telescope was in too high a orbit for the Space Shuttle
-
Who wants to see the launch, you can watch it live here (or you can watch on NASA TV on your television if you have it):
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/
The launch is planned at EDT:
11:26 a.m. EDT - July 8, 2011
So that's 16:26 GMT for Great-Britain or 17:26 for Holland.
-
Course it won't launch tomorrow - only 30% chance of GO due to weather... :/
-
you mean today TFM? tomorrow it'll go
-
i wonder what the new shuttles will look like? ??? ::)
Acutely they are going back to rockets like in the 60's and 70's. They are called Ares I and Ares V.

Which I believe have now been cancelled, due to budget cuts...
They were to be the beginning to a new moon landing...
*Mainly because George W tried to do a Kennedy of getting Man to the Mars by the end of the decade this failed due to:
a) the financial crisis
b) Kennedy was assassinated
*Note - not that I think anyone should be assassinated, but the death of Kennedy was a spurring to NASA to do it - fulfilling his legacy and such
-
I bought this DVD set awhile ago, pretty interesting if you fancy the subject :)

Ill die from saddnes :'(
Calm down its only a heap of metal
-
NASA spent billions on this project
and you're saying "it's a cheap hunk of metal", come on you can do better at commenting on history.
-
I never said it was cheap :)
But really, it doesn't effect us. All it does it gives us some information about the solar system.
-
Thanks VS for the video I saw it on a tv you can't record stuff on
-
*Thinks Title needs updating... :)
-
 how do you change it then have it stay

i love the last one!
-
I remember the first launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia in April 1981. What a sensation, I was just a boy of 7 years old. I also remember the Challenger disaster in 1986 and the Columbia disaster in 2003.
-
The Space Shuttle Atlantis has berthed with the ISS :)
-
I'm happy to hear that :D
-
Did they broadcasted it live from the Nasa website?! :o
-
If they did I missed it
-
They didn't do it with the previous missions, perhaps too high risk :-\
-
Maybe...
-
Who wants to see the launch, you can watch it live here (or you can watch on NASA TV on your television if you have it):
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/
They do broadcast it live actually. :P
I even posted a link to the broadcast, but I guess most of you missed it but it's here above in the quote.
-
Not the launch - I saw that
I meant the meet up with the ISS
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_2000.html

though there are bigger ones...

Now THATS a rocket engine
-
gee i'd hate to be on the business end of that thing  :o
-
The hatches between the Space Shuttle and the Space Station have been sealed closed now for the last time
-
how are they going to finish the ISS?
-
I think it is near completed now
anything else will have to go up by cargo rocket
-
i always thought they still had a long way to go
-
Who?
-
Who?
NASA
-
Ahh
NASA has gone back recently - they are losing a lot of budget and are having to make lots of cuts :/
-
Ahh
NASA has gone back recently - they are losing a lot of budget and are having to make lots of cuts :/
so who will finish the ISS :C
-
As I said I think it is near finished
the Russians can still launch stuff, as can ESA, and NASA still has some cargo rockets
-
okay :)
-
The Space Shuttle Atlantis has separated from the Space Station

not long before oceandreamdies of sadness

Damn, I missed it also. I can't believe it because I am a huge fan of space and such. BIG shame, but at least we can keep track of the russian space missions and such, it's not like humans have stopped going into space :)
