Any ideas about that thing on the 2nd image?  Doesn't look like an oil rig. Doesn't look like a crane ship also.  ???
That would be the Erik Raude, its pretty clear to me in the picture. The very same Erik Raude we have right now.

Don't know about you, but it seems your eyes are deceiving you. ;D

It's surely not Erik Raude (Does look like there isn't any legs).. I'm fairly sure it's something different..
Are you looking at the image that DIAMANT has in his post you quoted?

No, dont see any picture. He said the second one, so i assumed it was the second picture that FrankVSTEP posted. It is the Erik Raude.

EDIT:

I just saw a ship out in the background of that second pic :P I think thats what he may be talking about, but i dont see any pics in his post. I believe that may be the Jumbo Javelin, but not too sure. :-\

It looks most like a drillship—such as the JOIDES ship Resolution, or another Ocean Drilling Project vessel.

Isnt the derrick supposed to be straight then?  ;)

I'd go for a FPSO or another kind of production platform. The structure is similar to the vapour tower they use for vapour control.

Straight relative to the ship—not always relative to the sea when the ship is underway.

Here is JOIDES Resolution in Barbados, preparing to leave on ODP leg 207 to drill into cretaceous time in order to measure the climate back then.
As I recall, the ugly ship on the left is Star Princess.

#2 is an older picture of JR. Between the helipad and the derrick is the pipe rack. Forward of the derrick are the labs.

#3 is a picture of the ship’s officers…er, no…they are the drilling crew from the Philippines.

#4 is the scientific party—29 members from nine nations.

I think J3nsen might have the answer. Take away one of the cranes and it is very similar. Note that it is not possible to see separate legs even in close up view.

Hi D,
It would probably be a static ship, if she is in at all. There would be little to do with her in missions as a player ship. The really interesting activity takes place on the drilling floor and in the labs. On that particular leg she crossed the equator, so there was fun torturing the pollywogs.

Not very straight relative to the ship  :)

What a discussion, based on a silhouette on the horizon  ;D

Hi DIAMANT,
Your picture markings give it three cranes. ??? One big one and two smaller ones with the jibs lowered. Verrrry interrrresting. :-X  But Ballast, have you never seen ships etc. on the horizon and wondered what they were? I can remember seeing three big funnels showing on the horizon and everyone was arguing about what ship it was, it turned out to be the Queen Mary, the first one that is, not the current one. Psst, don't tell everyone how long ago that was.

Hi Luc,

Actually, much closer to home. A little deductive reasoning, and familiarity with Pro. No secret there, a search will turn up a Wikipedia article on Pro.

Marty

If anyone wants a close-up picture, they should ask Frank.

The big structure doesn't have to be a crane, it could be lots of things.

Just look at this picture:
http://www.you-are-here.com/info/platform.jpg

The big structure isn't a crane  ;)

Same thing on this picture:

OK Sam, you are quite correct. I'll stop the teasing now, the "tower" is actually a flare support, (I do not know what it is really called) which carries the burning waste gases well away from the platform.

Gentlemen,
To settle the matter, here is the tip of the tower. Any more of the structure will have to be approved by Frank.
In the picture from Extremes, you are facing the end of the structure with the tower; that is why the tower appears to be at that angle. My shot—in Marseilles—was at a slightly different angle to show the other features more clearly.
