Title: POR leaving Beatrixhaven
Post by: gzerovti on March 18, 2008, 10:51:50
Hi,

I have never travelled on the POR but it is my favourite ship.

Looking on the aerial maps of Rotterdam I zoomed in to Beatrixhaven and there is the POR at the dock.

My question is how do they manouver the POR out of this dock when there are other ships tied up at the wharf exactly opposite her?

I have left this berth many times in ship sim 08 but looking at it in real life I wonder what sequence of controls they use to get her out.

I would be very interested in answers to this question.

Thanks

Terry

I think, she leaves her berth sideways, then running astern a few lenghts until she reaches the wider area for turning. It's as easy as it sounds.. ;)

Cheers

I've travelled on the North Sea Ferries/P&O vessels a few times and they sail the same way as the game. Last night I sailed back on the Pride of Hull and we had the Stena Partner on the berth opposite. All mooring lines except the starboard stern post line were let go and we turned using the bow thruster (and possibly port prop) until well round to face seaward, then the last line is let go and we were off down the Beatrixhaven.

Thanks for replies.

There just does not seem to be enough room to swing round using the bow thruster. She must be very close to the Stena Partner at one point!

On the sim I have turned the POR as you have described but I wouldnt like to think I was doing the same with the Stena opposite.

Thanks

Terry

Hello,
Prinses Beatrixhaven is a dock inside Eemhaven, does Pride of Hull load/unload trucks there? It seems indeed that there is not much room, not only for the ship, but also a certain lack of parking for the trucks.  8)

Luc

Oops - I should have spotted that - it is the Beneluxhaven.

The PoR/H leaves at 9pm. Maybe there is no stena line ship berthed opposite at this time?

There was last night - the Stena Partner berthed around 7pm and was still there when we sailed late at 10pm

It is indeed a very tight fit, and yes the Stena Line ship is always on the berth.  The port control apparently do not like the ships going astern before turning around.

If I remember rightly the ships use their bow thrusters alone initially and then the port prop on low revolutions.  Rate of turn is normally around 30 degrees per minute.
