there is no real train to base it on though

My Number 1 train though has to be the 4CIG  ;D

And the Flying Scotsman is very realistic I think

I have to say I'm quite impressed with the screenshots from Railworks, has anyone tried trainz 12, how does it compare with railworks3?

Hi Clanky,

I, too, am impressed with RW3. As a long-time Trainz user who took a long hiatus when ShipSim offered me a chance to steer something, it’s difficult to be totally objective.
I’ve been watching RW develop since the Kuju days, but the huge amount of content available for Trainz kept my interest there. However, with Trainz 12 there is the same legacy problem that plagues Extremes—much of the good content won’t work in the newer version.

The graphics are excellent in both RW3 and Tr12; which is better depends largely on which aspects float your boat.

The driving interface in RW3 is very good once you get accustomed to its differences from Tr.
The new TSX graphics engine seems to be a winner. RW appear to make good use of GPUs to take much of the computational burden off of the CPU—something that needs to happen with Extremes if it is to progress much further.

From a technical standpoint, the RW Route & Scenario Editors are very interesting and well documented. There is a refreshing degree of transparency in the way the nuts and bolts are documented.
As is traditional in the train simulator business, third-party content providers are encouraged and very well supported. I expect that the available DLs to keep increasing rapidly.

My experience with S.T.E.A.M has been entirely seamless through various updates and DLs.

Regards,
Marty

Thanks Marty, is it as easy to produce new environments / scenarios in RS3 as in TRS?

I have been running TRS2010 on my laptop and it struggles at times, was thinking of buying a decent desktop / gaming PC to run TRS12 and some other things anyway, but am tempted to go with RW3 instead of TRS12 now.

Hi Clanky,

It’s early days for me where route & scenario building in RW3 is concerned. I’ve just recently been devoting the bulk of my free time to that—and mainly to the track-laying and scenario aspects rather than the scenery. My general impression is that the tools for the latter are at least as good as, and in some ways better than, the tools in the earlier versions of Trainz.

RW3 provides a very flexible grid and snapping for positioning objects, and a good distance measuring tool. There is much help available, both from the official RW site and from many independent forums, which are, for the most part, business-like and devoid of nonsense.

Many developer tools are available from those sites that allow you to import DEM data or overlay the terrain with Google Map decals. You can also place route markers in Google Maps and then convert them to route blueprints for import into RW. This simplifies laying out track, roads, etc. in prototypical routes. To the extent that Routes are the equivalent of Environments, they are at least possible for a user to make independently of any action by the game company.

Scenario construction might be compared to Mission creating—it has its learning curve but is well documented. It is very interesting in its many possibilities—AI trains, automatic switching & dispatching, freight & passenger loading/unloading, etc. AI trains are somewhat less prone to squirrely behavior (I think the track may have something to do with that).

More on this later as I get deeper into it. I think you’ll find RW3 is a good investment.
Those HS train shots don’t really show the graphics quality as well as, say, the UP Big Boy does.

I’ll post a full shot when I get a chance.

That brings back a few memories, I used to help out with the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, I have put a few rivets in fireboxes in my time!

Hi Clanky,

To further answer your question about route & scenario construction, here is a short sample of the documentation about using the time compression facility to test AI train behavior.
Clicking one of the blue links should let you explore the relatively massive documentation provided by railsimulator.com.
In addition there are a number of independent forums that give help. You can find a list of them on the SUPPORT page of railsimulator.com under Developers.
I recommend the 3D Trains forum; Marc runs a tight ship with many very informative posts and no sandbox.

Have you all been on low alcohol shandy last night? Flying trains. What the hell?

Zombies on the GW mainline, I can handle (that's normally worst great western management out on a field trip) but flying HSTs? What was all the fire about?

Or is ryanscare now entering the rail business- not only do they still not take you to the right destination, now they're sending you by train.
