Haven`t seen you around lately so just decided to wake you up. You never did tell me what you thought of my
joke about Pat and Mick going `trout tickling`. Nevermind though ! Anyway Jack, seriously now, all joking aside....Stay proud ! Don`t let them put the Irish `down`! Remind the world that it does in fact owe a great deal to the Irish ! For example:- I`ll bet they don`t realise that it actually was the Irish who invented the lavatory seat ? Mind you.... IT TOOK THE ENGLISH TO PUT A HOLE IN IT !!!
I`m going off to my underground bunker now for a week or two, but please let me know when you`re `back to normal`.
Regards,
Ken.

That's because the English are so full of **** :P

Hi Clanky,
While I agree that Ken’s remark was inappropriate for this forum, and more in that vein might lead to his riding off into the sunset – as he earlier promised, please refrain from escalating the situation, even with asterisks.
Regards,
Marty
-
Marty, my reply was a joke, as I am sure was Ken's original post.
-
If I may interject something, clanky..
Even though it's obviously a joke, if a certain word is not proper enough to use on the forum, and you thus have to censor yourself with asterisks, then you should regard that word as off limits in any shape or form, and not use it's censored form either.
It's not how you swear, it's the swearing itself, that's not allowed. Be it in asterisks, alternative spelling ord proper spelling alike.
And I can't say that I am a big fan of generalising, derogatory remarks towards certain groups of people, one way or the other... :-\
Regards,
Fred
-
So let me get this straight, English is a second language for you and you can speak it better than me?
D:
-
I beg your pardon? :-\
-
well I've never heard of 'asterisks' before, and that is in the english dictionary...
-
Oh hehe, I get it... well I am sure there are also English words I haven't heard of that you know, mate. ;D
I don't think language skills are down to a single word, to be honest. :P
-
Plimuff?
-
pli-muff?
;D
-
No.
-
what you locals call plymouth?
-
Very good, in one.
-
do you think we should continue this in cookie box?
-
Yeah, OK...
-
well I've never heard of 'asterisks' before, and that is in the english dictionary...
Fred was just showing off; everyone else calls it a “splatâ€.
The word is from Greek: Asteriskos – little star.
-
Actually I call it an Asterisk too Marty. So would that mean I'm also showing off?
The word 'splat' sounds like that's what young children would call it.
-
im kinda young and i've never called or heard it called it a splat however, i am quite computer literate

Hi Mad Fred,
A short while ago I sent `posts` to Clanky, Marty, and yourself, regarding the above. Those `posts` seem to have disappeared into thin air. I can find no trace. Has someone taken it upon themselves
to obliterate those posts ? If so I would consider it to be most unreasonable and unfair to prevent other members reading them. Particularly IRISH JACK who I happen to regard pretty highly.
Based on past exchanges with you Fred, I trust you will give me a `straight answer` with no `flannel`!
Regards,
Ken.

Hahaha that's a good one with the toilet seat  :D
With regards to me not being around so much...i've had exams constantly this past week; so i've been revising as much as I can for them.
Also - I read your joke about Paddy and Mick going fishing...I laughed at that for a considerable amount of time
Kind Regards,
Jack.

Hi Ken,
I don't know which specific posts you are talking about, to tell you the truth. Was it in a specific topic, or were they topics of your own?
I don't see any entries in the moderation logs about removal of your posts or deleting of any topic of yours, to be honest. So I am afraid I can't really give you a concrete answer on this one. :-\

Fred

I suppose you consider all typographers to be young children. It is common usage with them to call an asterisk a splat, an exclamation point a “bangâ€, etc.
If you read my top post, you will see that I, also, called it an asterisk.
Fortunately, in addition to his excellent command of English, Fred has a good sense of humor, which you apparently lack.
-
Marty,
I am not going to get into a debate with you over this, but I do indeed have a sense of humour and only voiced my opinion that I thought a 'splat' sounded like what a child would perhaps have called it. I, myself have not heard of this before, and did not imply that you were a child, nor anything of the sort.
So if you're going to reply to people, at least do it in such a way that would not offend people, as I found your commend rather unpleasant.
At least I have a sense of humour and laughed it off ;)
-
I've never heard it called a splat either, or a period a bang.
-
It depends on the country I suppose :)
I know in England in our English classes the teacher always said it was called an asterisk. That's how I've learnt it!
A splat or a bang sounds quite funny! With all respect :)

Hi Marty,
My `Hey there IRISH JACK` was very obviously a joke and not intended to offend anyone. Though I do tend to forget sometimes that we now live in a `ridiculously screwed up world` of `over the top political correctness`and all that. I`m only sorry that my sense of humour seems to have backfired somewhat in being responsible for the censure of another member, namely Clanky. Clanky`s reply certainly did not offend me, it was another joke, and I certainly was expecting to get one or two such replies. [ though perhaps he should have opted for a simple `blank` rather than using asterisks ]. Actually Marty, I was more perturbed by your own comment. Quote:-" more in that vein might lead to his riding off [my actual words were `sailing off`] into the sunset". I believe in `give and take` and I am certainly open to criticism when warranted. If ever I am considered to be`out of order`then I would much prefer the direct approach rather than toread`veiledthreats`.
Having said all that, I would only really worry about this issue if IRISH JACK were to take offence, and I`m quite confident that he will not. My past exchanges with Jack tell me that he enjoys a laugh and that he knows I would readily accept such `banter` from him, or from anyone else for that matter.
Regards,
Ken.
-
Thanks for your reply Fred,
Don`t know what happened to those `posts` at all. Nevermind though, you are probably aware that I`ve already sent another one off to Marty. Am about to `send` to Clanky as well.
Thanks for your trouble Fred.
Ken.

Hi Clanky,
I sent you a `post` on this yesterday, but it mysteriously disappeared. I will not bother to give you a full `repeat` now because you can get the gist of it from my last post [today am] to Marty.
I will simply say I`m sorry mate that my sense of humour seems to have backfired somewhat in that it was instrumental in earning you a censure from the `higher echelon`. What more can I say ?
Keep `clanking`.
Ken.
-
Ken,
First, I did not censure Clanky, I asked him not to escalate the situation, and reminded him of the long-established rule against language that some might see as offensive.
Whether or not a particular member of a group, Jack in this instance, was offended by your comments is not relevant. Such remarks directed at an entire group are also not acceptable. What you saw as a veiled threat was simply a reminder of that fact.
This forum is the public face of VSTEP. The moderators have the responsibility to see that it is not perceived as an ugly one.

Okay Marty, point taken. No more jokes etc. However, I did not make `COMMENTS`[to be construed as offensive or otherwise], I simply told a `JOKE`. Still, as I said earlier we do now happen to live in a `screwed up world` where we actually allow all the `nut cases` and `head bangers`to dictate how we live and speak.
I imagine that before long we will have the `thought police`patrolling our streets, or even have compulsory `thought detectors` installed in all our homes.
What ever happened to those wonderful and INNOCENT days of all those `Pat and Mick`jokes [amongst many others] when ALL SIDES had absolutely loads of fun ? What a sad and pathetic world this has become !
Anyway Marty, whatever ? I would still much prefer the `direct approach` !
My thoughts now on the necessary qualities to be a good moderator :- Must have the wisdom of Solomon.- Must have the patience of Job.- Must be extremely perceptive.-and above all, must be extremely skilled in choosing the correct approach in all eventualities ! I trust Marty, that you will not find any `offence` in that lot ! Believe me, none is intended !
Regards,
Ken.

Well, this seems to have blown out of all proportion while I have been away!
Firstly apologies for lighting the blue touch paper and retiring, if only real ships were as unproblematic as ShipSim ships (or if they could at least be switched off the way ShipSim ones can!)
Marty / Fred, point taken about the asterisks.
Marty, my response to your initial post was more because I was shocked that you thought Ken's first post was offensive than to try to defend my choice of language.
It horrifies me that people cannot have a laugh about things any more, everyone is so busy tiptoeing around the sensibilities of others that they are terrified not only to speak their minds, but also to poke a little fun at people.
Things are only offensive if you take offence, unfortunately we seem to be living in a climate were we are surrounded by the professionally offended, and they seem to dominate internet forums, while i understand that this forum is the public face of VStep and that the moderation policy has to reflect that I would urge you not to pander to the professionally offended, in my experience it just leads to more people being more outraged more often over smaller and smaller things.
Ken, don't worry about your post getting me into trouble, I am more than capable of getting myself into trouble without any help!
So can we all go back to having some fun now?
-
