I can't really see the point of it to be honest (the big crane thing), and I think the actual ship is pretty ugly.

It's neither my type of ship. Oasis of the Seas was on the edge of looks I think  :P
Some things on this ship feel out of proportion.

No, that's more like advertising.

Besides the cattle-carrier design, she includes some interesting concepts. The window design in the back is beautiful, and the... bubble-dome ride?... is a great example of RCLs innovation in cruise ship entertainment.

Not to sound cliched, but what a long, strange, trip it's been.

The arm is brilliant but just like any other amazing concept it will break down in the worse place (when its out)

For that reason, hopefully there will be some sort of emergency exit. Being trapped in a bubble dome enhancing the sun's heat could ruin your whole day.

Speaking of which, it must get very hot in the bubble, unless there's air conditioning.

Because someone in the cruise industry decided around 1990 that what all passengers wanted was an outside cabin with a balcony, so the cruise industry have been building ships with only outside balcony cabins. To get as many balcony cabins into the available space as possible the ships need to be straight sided and straight ended.

The central (inboard) areas are used for galleys, bars, restaurants, shops, spas, technical spaces like air conditioning fan rooms and crew accommodation.

While pictures of a young glamorous couple sipping cocktails on their balcony look good in the brochures, the truth is that most passengers don't actually spend that much time in their cabins as one of the good points of cruising as a holiday is that you spend time in the public areas meeting other passengers and enjoying the facilities onboard.

The reason why passengers wanted balcony cabins was that it was a status symbol on the ship to have a balcony, when all the cabins have balconies it stops being a status symbol so it loses it's value.  The reason the ships are so big is the same reason that container ships are getting bigger, the bigger the ship, the more cargo you can carry per tonne of fuel per mile travelled and the more profitable the ship should be.

That is not exactly true.

Even modern day cruiseships contain more inside cabins than they have balcony cabins. balcony cabins are generally more expensive obviously thanks to the view they have. Yes the desire for these cabins increased in the meantime resulting in more balcony cabins but that is only reasonable, considering the fact these are ships built for vacations instead of necessary travel.
Why people prefer a balcony cabin has nothing to do with status or anything alike. If you want status, you rent the Parlour suites. Who on earth knows you rented one anyway when you walk on deck. Waking up in the early morning seeing the sun shine over the ocean or nearby island is where you want a balcony for. And trust me, people sit outside all the time, and believe me more, they appreciate that privacy.  ;)

I seem to be one of the few people here who wholly likes the Quantum of the Seas' design, including its look ;D

The cabins seem blandly designed, though, seeing as they seem to all be decorated almost entirely in white, including the most expensive ones....

2016 is shaping up to be architecturally interesting, with the completed One World Trade Center, Quantum of the Seas cruising about with its bumper cars and observation deck, and Titanic II taking passengers through one of the more dangerous shipping routes!

I'm glad this one lives. I am really curious behind his motive.

Two70 looks nice! Very innovative in nautical auditorium design, as well as auditorium design in general.

Something to keep in mind about this vessel is that she's not larger than Oasis of the Seas. They instead focused their efforts more on luxury, such as a skydiving simulator on deck, virtual balconies indoors, and two-story penthouse-like cabins :P

That's better! :2thumbs: Luxury should be considered before size.

And about the virtual interior balconies, how does that work? Is it an image of outside on a large screen with simulated sunshine, warmth, and breezes?

The main thing that I know about the virtual balcony is that, if I've read correctly, it uses an LED screen (not sure if it wraps around or not) which displays a live feed of the sea outside of the ship. The virtual portholes work similarly, but with presumably smaller screens.

Also, a small element of the North Star that I like is that its neutral position is backwards-facing. Call me crazy, but I prefer that over the idea of the arm resting in a forward-facing position ;D
