Title: Once upon a Time
Post by: Aad The Pirate on July 24, 2010, 19:02:01
Once upon a Time, but not so long ago, there was a Queen, visiting my Hometown, Rotterdam. The day she left, I took my massive VHS Video Camera, build 1980 and something, and shot her.
Please be not to hard with your comments about the quality. After all, it was 1992
Kind Regards
Aad
P.S.
I made this vid in 1992, but just found it back today revising my huge Video Collection. And then converted it and loaded it up.
Have Fun

P.P.S.
Due to some strange effects the picture ratio is 16 : 9  instead of 4 : 9, therforethe Queen is so longstreched.
I'll try to correct this a.s.a.p. and will upload the corrected version.

Here the corrected one:

Thank you for that video Aad. It was nice to see some old fashioned flag etiquette, blue ensign flying from the ensign staff when moored but shifted to the gaff when underway. I can remember watching her on my parents black and white TV when she was launched from John Browns shipyard on the Clyde on 20th September, 1967. I was home at the time and visiting them.
Thanks again,

Angus.

So many of the old traditions of the sea seem to have died out almost completely now :(

Nice film Aad, and good quality for such "old" technology.. But why did you shoot through a porthole..?

Very nice video. I'm impresed!!

In that time, i haven't even heard for camera, didn't know it was possible to take shoots like these one.
These must to be an good camera, and also it's worht. Thes ethings are expensive, and you can see them in the musseums.

Nice job, and nice videos!

Thank you!

Kind regards.

In those days that camera was about 3.000 Dutch Guilders, that would be 1.350 €uro's in todays currency. And it was on that large tapes. I had to convert it to avi first, therefore a lot of quality loss

Ahoy SD,
It wasn't a shot through a porthole. It was one of them odd screw on lenses to give me a bit more zoom ability. But when I zoomed in to much, you actually see the inside of that screw on device. In some spots you can see that the rim of the 'porthole' is turning. It was a manual zoom, not operated by a button, but really turned by hand. Very Oldfashioned
Kind Regards

Really enjoyed that - Thanks for sharing :)

It's strange to think that the videos we take now may be all future generations see. Not the actual ship... :-\
