New user with a new user question re ports.
« on: September 21, 2012, 19:48:44 »

Hi- I have just entered the world of SSE and so far am impresseed with the entire setup so far. However, one thing I am wondering is the lack of different ports of call available, esp when compared to MS FlightSim, where a great number of authentic arifields and terminals around the globe can be loaded with the click of my mouse.

As a West Coast Canadian, I would love to be able to set missions to and from our major ports in this area (Seattle USA, Vancouver/Victoria Canada, Prince Rupert and etc up to Anchorage Alaska), and also some of the major Grt Lakes and East Coast ports (outside of NYC), but it seems that choices are very very limited.

Is there a plan in the works to add more ports....ever?

Otherwise, so far, I'm happy, and learning much.  Local ports would simply be icing on the cake.. (I like icing)

More North American ports is a great idea! Especially the Great Lakes, we could have Duluth with a working Aerial Lift Bridge! ;D

But as far as anyone here knows, there are no plans for any new ports.

More ports would be great! Especially Duluth, I live Minnesota, and I've only been up to Duluth once, but in less than a week I'll once again be sitting on the porch of the Lake Superior Inn, eating smores on the shore of Lake Superior, Minnesota's a true beauty, especially the more you get up north.

When I was up there, I saw a huge tanker that had to atleast been a supertanker, the thing almost took a whole 2 minutes to pass by my hotel window, and it was going atleast 10 knots if not faster.

But I will have to echo your post Rbsanford, VSTEP doesn't seem to be adding any ports as of right now. But you and me will have to cross our fingers for Duluth.

Cheers!

Actually, I just want to point out that maybe it wasn't a supertanker I saw, more than likely it was a bulker, but it still was long. But as for the friend part:

Good to know!  :2thumbs:

I've seen a few supertankers:

James R. Barker
Paul R. Tregurtha ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f0EirG0oHA&feature=context-gau )
Edward H. Gott ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqcPrOUKCqw&feature=g-upl )
American Spirit
American Integrity

Bulkers:

American Courage ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3herRIp2xJU&feature=g-upl )

Freighters:

Hon. James L. Oberstar ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdAdGvxLvgk&feature=g-upl )

Barges:

Presque Isle ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT8AxHQxLHc&feature=context-gau )
Great Lakes Trader ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GDqbYqUdxk&feature=context-gau )

Foreign ships:

Dredgtborg (Dutch) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icfuMpwINwE&feature=g-upl )

and Cruise ships:

C. Columbus ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u9c8PIUOlY&feature=g-upl )

The James L. Oberstar one was filmed during an unfortunate accident: A kid dove into the water off of the ice fishing building and got stuck somehow under a rock. The police, fire crews, and Coast Guard successfully retrieved him using an ROV, but he later died in the hospital. :-\

Actually (I hate to correct people), but I saw the Paul R. Tregurtha when I was up there just recently. However, as it may look like a supertanker, it's a bulker. I wish the great lake ports accepted tankers, or even container vessels. Some true ocean traffic would be excellent to spice up the dull great lakes traffic, but I don't mind.

Some of the other ships I saw were the Arthur M. Anderson, American Mariner, Walter J. McCarthy Jr., and the Agloma Navigator. I have photos of all.  8)

As for the accident, sounds very sad. When did this occure? The first time I was at Duluth was just last June, which was then the boy died. Any info on the accident?

Best regards,

Carter

Oh, I thought you were mistaken, thinking a superfreighter was a supertanker, so I used the same term. I used Bulker to describe one size smaller then a superfreighter.

As for the accident, I think it went down roughly a week after the great flood of June 19th.

And some Great Lakes ports do accept tankers and container ships, but only small inland ones. I think there are oil tankers in Duluth sometimes, seeing that neighboring Superior has a large oil refinery, and the pipeline from Alaska runs beneath Lake Superior. Foreign ships do pass through Duluth often, as long as both sets of locks are available. In fact, at this moment, there are two European heavy-lifters at anchor.

I know they accept some of these vessels, when I was first up there, I saw a container vessel, and what appeared to be a tanker as well. But it even says on its website that Duluth doesn't usually accept container ships, and a supertanker in ballast could probably be navigated through the canal. There was one ship I missed while I was up there, it was the Polish Drawsko, I missed it coming out of port when I was out for supper.

Yeah, I wasn't using the term supertanker to describe freighters, when I say supertanker I mean a VLCC or ULCC.

Also, neighboring Wisconson is greatly despised in Duluth, there was a ton of shirts I saw in the I ❤ Duluth shop hammering Green Bay, I found it kind of funny, I'm not particularly a Green Bay fan.  :P

Cheers!

It's really Iowa that Minnesotans hate. Wisconsin isn't that bad, except for Superior. Did you know that Superior has a bar and nightclub district? But yes, Green Bay is also pretty bad. But the Abbeyland in the western plains of the state is beautiful! ;D

Isn't that the truth, us Minnesotans seem to think we are superior, towering over Iowa, and standing proud next to Wisconson, and the Dakotas, but to use Minnesotans, thats as true as the variety of foods you can get at the state fair.

To be honest I don't really hate any states. It's the teams and the competition that I come to hate, and the humour that comes in between is just so funny.

As for Duluth vs. Superior, Duluth is obviously a better town, and has some of the best air quality in the country. Also, at one time in history, was home to more billionaires then any other place in the world, of course during the time when we discovered all that iron ore and taconite. If you have ever seen the Charles Congdon mansion, it's a true beauty. It was said to have one of the first thermostates in the entire nation.  :D Not to mention all the rare materials that were used in the building of the home, it even hade some marble that is currently unavailable anywhere in the world. The house is worth 1.2 billion dollars in today's currency.

The state is beautiful anywhere you go, there are always hidden wonders to be discovered. :)

Cheers!

Yes, the Congdon Manor (aka Glensheen) is amazing! ;D Perfect location, at the mouth of Tischer creek. Too bad about the murders though. But what's a mansion if nobody was ever killed in it?

Duluth also probably has the best tap water of any city in the world! In fact, a company once thought of building a pipeline from Lake Superior to Arizona so those in the desert could have cool fresh water from their taps.

I also have a souvenir book of the city from 1905, and it says it was one of the best cities ever.   Near perfect condition, except for a little bit of masking tape, and shows classic black and white pictures of the trolleys, canal, port, old iron mines, the Vermillion Trail, and the Aerial Bridge, the early lift bridge where passengers were taken by trolley to Minnesota Point.

You from the cities?

I agree.

The pipeline sounds interesting, but also expensive. It would take some time to figure where it's going to be built and what-not.

Sadly, I am not from the cities. I was born in Austin, MN and currently living in the country in a small town 15 miles away, by the name of Blooming Prairie, ever heard of it? Population is just peaked over 2,000 people, theres not much to see but it's a quiet town, lot of nice people.

The murders there are pretty sad, I also heard they had a 53 foot yacht that lasted them 5 years before being destroyed by a fire in a refueling accident, who knew? I would've liked to see pictures of it.  :-\

I would also like to note, your banner shows today's weather-in Duluth, correct? That structure in the picture, would that happen to be the little yellow tugboat on display in front the of the maritime center and museum?

Cheers!

Yes, the camera is positioned above the maritime museum, so that is the USCG tugboat.

As for the yacht, it might have been a Chris Craft cruiser, which was most popular in the 1950s.

Here's an image from an ad in the '60s:

They just don't make boats like that anymore.

That might have been their yacht, but honestly if I was a family with that kind of money back then, I would go with the biggest, the fastest, and the best yacht available. I'm not sure what kind of yacht they had, the tour guide told us very little about the yacht, that it was 53 feet long and burned down. But I did see the boathouse, it was fairly large, but most of Lake Superior had washed up over the dock, so it was kind of hard to tell.

They really don't make ships and boats like they used to, the 5 largest ships ever built were made and touched the waters during the 70s, those ships were of course the famous Seawise Giant, as well as the 4 Batillus Shell supertankers. They also didn't last long, supertankers of that size had docks shuffling to find a place to put them, and over the years supertankers of that size were technically called overkill, since oil need had gone down. Things of true beauty are nothing but history now, so sad. Forever in leaving memory, Seawise Giant (1979-2009), Batillus (1976-1985), Bellamya (1976-1986),  Pierre Guillaumat (1977-1983), and Prairial (1979-2003). Needless to say you will be missed. :'(

Honestly, if I had a million dollars, I would get a Chris Craft cruiser yacht like the one in the picture right away. Luckily the yachts are still very popular on the upper Great Lakes, so at least one must be for sale.

Yeah, it would be nice to buy one of those yachts, ride the waves in style.

You are right, yachts are still popular on the Lakes, and maybe someday I will own one, wouldn't it be nice?

Cool, wish there was one here.

I have a question for you. Would you happen to play SSE on Steam? I play SSE on Steam, and I would love to have you as a friend. The reason I ask this is because I read you got Dive to the Titanic for free off of Steam (or it seemed you did) for the 100th Anniversary of the Titance sinking. And your avatar is that of the logo/emblem of Half-Life 2, is it not? Half-Life 2 looks like a very fun game, been wanting to get it for awhile now.

Yes, I have all my games (except Minecraft) on Steam. And that is Lambda-squared (aka "Half Life 2" symbol).

Still waiting for Lambda cubed, but I highly recommend HL2. It's an incredible game with a rich plot, photorealistic graphics, great characters/ai, amazing physics engine, wide range of weapons, etc.

But if you're interested, you should get HL1 first. And of course the two episodes following Half Life 2.

Exactly, I don't like to cut into the middle of game stories, its so confusing.  :P

If you would like to add me on Steam, my username is 7r41ns. You should find a guy from the U.S.A with the Canadian National railroad logo as his avatar, but that is of course if you want to add me, perfectly ok if you don't.  ;D

I'm kind of aniticipating tomorrow, as all of you Americans on this forum know, it's election day.  ::) Can't wait to see how this goes.

Thanks for the invintation, now I won't have to wait for you to post on the forums to talk to you.

Since I'm not 18 yet, I can't vote. But as a teenager I'm on Obama's side too, and I'm also on your side saying that the two ammendments should not pass. By the end of today, hopefully we will be able to see who is going to run our great country for 4 more years.

I think everyone should get to vote. After all, citizens in a democratic nation deserve the right to decide who should be in charge of their country. At the same time, they should get rid of the Electoral College; it was only useful when there were more small towns and communications were slower. Now we can post a message here on the forums and a second later everyone all over the world can see it. Therefore, popular vote would be much easier today, and should be resurrected.

Just my two cents. ;)
