Title: Can I update the built-in PhysX of the 1.3
Post by: MokMok on March 31, 2011, 17:59:00
SSE has since the 1.3.5 patch built-in PhysX library files for computing the ships and wave movements.

Here is the listing of these PhysX files:

Directory of c:\Program Files\Vstep\ShipSimExtremes\3rd

15-02-2011  08:39          406.880 PhysXCooking.dll
15-02-2011  08:39        3.597.664 PhysXCore.dll
15-02-2011  08:39           71.008 PhysXDevice.dll
15-02-2011  08:39           75.104 PhysXLoader.dll

These files have a version nr. 2.8.4.4.

Nvidia has its own PhysX files located at c:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\PhysX\ The filenames are the same as the built-in PhysX of SSE.

When Nvidia releases a newer version of PhysX than the included PhysX version in SSE can I overwrite these files with the newer version? So that SSE will use the most recent version of PhysX.

I doubt that it would be a good idea, for reasons that have been mentioned often on this forum.
So far as I know, SSE does not use PhysX, per se.
Only the physics routines are used, and they run only on the CPU—not on the nvidia GPU.
VSTEP have written their own installer for PhysX—installing a different version yourself would most likely screw things up.

But you can always try it. Back-up the orginal files. And just try. Who knows what for great improvement you get.  ;D

I'm assuming that you are hoping that some of the odd effects such as ships flying off docksides at high speed might be corrected by this. Or that your ships will somehow float better. Sorry, but I doubt that any of those things will happen.

The Nvidia detailed change logs don't reveal anything other than housekeeping updates and additional functions. Those changes won't be called up, of course.

As Marty says, the most likely outcome is that you will screw something up. Or at best, it will have no effect.

So why bother risk it at all?

Elsewhere on this forum you are warned that tampering with the game will mean that you are no longer entitled to receive technical support. I know that the good people who moderate this forum are very tolerant and kindly, but they do warn you.
