That is not quite exact, Nautis Full Bridge Simulator has the highest DNV simulation, class A, and can run on 2 PC's only, high end, in its smallest version.
Also, SS08 pre-dates Nautis, and there is no connection between SSE and Nautis except that VStep is the creator of both.
So, Danny, you have won the prize of bashing VStep on its own forum.

I think Vstep have switched NAUTIS to use the same engine as SSE (albeit without the bugs). I don't think Vstep will release anything as "open source", infact I'm surprised they know what the words "open source" means.
I know that a bunch of people tried to get Vstep to add a ship into SS08 and Vstep said it would cost ~£20,000

SSE and SS08 were/are dumbed down versions of NAUTIS. Besides, NAUTIS only just scraped the lowest DNV classification for simulators, so it can't be overly complex...

You're actually very wrong abouy that.

SS08 is the basis of Nautis but cannot even be compared when it comes to the entire product other than it looks roughly like it, and SSE is a totally different programme, engine, everything. And Nautis hasn't switched to it.

And instead of putting Vstep down, maybe they deserve a little respect for earning the qualifications and awards they did with the 'lowest' form of professional simulation, although they arent scraping the bottom at all as Luc also pointed out. Whatever you may think of SSE, Nautis is doing really good.

But then again, it would require an objective view of things and knowledge of what is really going on, to make that distinction.

So have you ever even seen or tried Nautis or actually read up on what it's doing in it's own weightclass or seen how complex it is or is not? I think not, given your rather uninformed and silly remark.

You might wanna tone it down a little kiddo, you don't know half as much as you seem to think you know, and ordinarily that is fine, but when you start insulting people, it's not and that seems to be a road you're taking a lot more these days.

Frustration about a game you'd like to be different is one, but if you really have no clue, don't just say whatever you THINK is going on. Cause you're not only wrong, you're very rude in the process.

Hi Luc, I assume that the 2 PC's only option is not for a full mission bridge simulator?

So what is the range of Nautis?  What do you get for your 2 PC's and what is possible with more computing power?

Having just been looking at the technical side of my own company's in house simulator, it would be nice to know what else is out there.  The server room for the simulator that I have been playing on looks like something from a sci-fi movie, it truly is other-worldly.

Hi Clanky
If you google V-Step it gives you the full range of what they do with Nautis
and other things with 2008.

People can say everything about SSE and SS08, But when it comes to Nautis...

Thanks Sid, very interesting link, so 11 PC's for a stand-alone full mission bridge simulator, that is pretty good to be honest.

Hello Clanky,
There is also a compact version, but not only VStep, other companies like Transas have now also such lightweight Class A simulators - relatively light. But to be STCW compliant, DNV Class A FMBS should be anyway supervised by an Instructor Station.
There are other compact simulators, like ECA Sindel, eventually agreed by other classification societies and countries, meeting the requirements. Nevertheless, simulators only give the training environment, and instructors remain the key element of the training and certification.

Regards,
Luc

The company I have just started working for has their own custom built simulator here in Singapore, it contains one full mission bridge simulator, one restricted mission bridge simulator and one engine room simulator, all fully interactive with each other if they want them to be.  It is a truly awesome piece of technology, but like you say it is the instructors who make it a useful tool for practising real life skills on.

The office? Nope, I am as i type, sat in a very nice hotel in Vung Tau, Vietnam, waiting to join a ship which may, or may not, be getting here on Friday.

This sailoring is a tough business.
