Maybe because football pitches are larger than stamps..

You also always hear references to Olympic swimming pools (water quantity), Boeing 747's (weight) or the Eiffel tower (height)..

I think its because people (atleast, most people) have seen a pool or football (that's soccer for you Americans) pitch in their lifetime.
