I have a question for the cookiebox,
In the UK, you can own and operate a yatch under 24m in lenght, however, is that LOA or LAWL? also, are there any tonnage restrictions? Thanks!

If you mean without a marine qualification then yes there are weight limits as well, so long as it is used for the sport or pleasure of the owner and not for financial gain then anything under 80GT doesn't require a marine qualification, if it is over 24m and under 3000GT than it is also exempt, if it is over 24m and over 3000GT then you need to be qualified to operate it.

Quote from: MCGA
Provided it meets the following requirements a pleasure vessel which is less than 3000 GT has
been exempted from the Merchant Shipping (Safe Manning, Hours of Work and Watchkeeping)
Regulations 1997:
Vessels of ≥ 24 metres length and ≥ 80 GT should comply with the manning requirements set out
in Merchant Shipping  Notice 1802 and Marine Guidance Note and 156 for deck and engineering
requirements respectively.
A vessel < 24 metres length or <80 GT need not comply with the Manning Regulations.

So, in theroy, I could buy a small sized cargo vessel of around 50mtrs and be AOK with sailing it around the UK... (as a yatch, obviously) That seems like a accident waiting to happen

From what I understood, no you cannot buy a cargo vessel, nor a 50 meter ship.

A cargo ship, whatever the size, woud be considered 'for financial gain'. So you would need an appropriate certification.

And since your cargo ship would be over 24 meters (and most probably over 3000GT!), you cannot buy/use it without the appropriate certification.

Can anymore confirm this?

IF you bought a commercial vessel then converted it to a "exploration yatch" (which basically means you make it like a yatch, but it keeps its looks) and operate it as your personal craft then its classed as a yatch, not being operated for commercial gain...

Ok, i've figured it out. Basicaly, anything under 24 mtrs and 80GT you don't need to meet any regs in terms of qaulifications, but anything over 24 mtrs but under 3000 you need to meet crewing req's for engineering and deck. I think?

It still won't respect the restrictions.

Over 24M and 30000GT, you need the certification. Otherwise you cannot own and operate your ship.

In your case, a 50M cargo vessel will most probably has tonnage over 3000. That means you will need a certification.

EDIT: Exactly, you got it

In Madrid, it's freezing!

Flight here was horrendous, thought I was going to un-eat my lunch at one point.

Not looking forward to getting back on a plane tomorrow, at least Cairo should be warmer.

We've been to Cairo last month to visit the piramides while discharging in Abu Qir

I'm not sure [if?] that's a good thing though...

This is certainly not a good thing!

You know what is the problem:

  • Your lack of effort when you type;
  • The fact that your posts rarely bring anything to the threads and are very often off topic.

I would like to quote this, you said it a while ago:

guys! i just like getting alot of posts!
Maybe this is also a part of the problem? You are looking for a lot of posts over the quality of them.

We just kept repeating over and over again, and finally a moderator simply repeated what we told you so many times! At this point, you didn't understand the message, so Mad_Fred had to send you another warning, repeating even more obviously what we all said before... A ban warning shouldn't be a surprize for you at this point! Do you understand now at least?
