If DFDS take more of an interest in the Irish Sea Services than NFL did, i'll eat my hat :)

No no no wait, i'll go out, buy a hat and then eat it !:)

NFL were starting to really try and make a go of the Irish Sea, the Flanders co. were starting to build the Heysham trade and the Vikings were doing OK out of Liverpool, we will see what DFDS decide to do about it, but IO would not be surprised at all if the answer is to give it a year and if it is still losing money then ditch all Irish sea services.

Although volumes are increasing it will take some time before freight rates go back up again.

Hard to know, the vessel is chartered in, so when the charter is finished the service could be axed.

Not sure how much EU funding the route has, so that could be a factor as well.  It is also theoretically possible that it could become profitable at some point...

Possibly, but it would seem to be in direct competition with the DFDS Newcastle-Amsterdam route, which uses two cruise ferries, which I assume will be less economically value, but they have two ships... definelty a hard call, but would be a shame to seee the route close, NL were doing ok, from what I gather

The ship that NFL have on the run, for all it's horribleness is very fuel efficient which will keep the costs down at least, I don't know what the freight rates are like, but if they can build up the trade then I guess it could work, although generally speaking you would need a daily (two ship) service to really make it work and I am not sure if there will ever be enough trade for that.

I think Superfast (who operated ot before NL) tried a two-ship service, but they reduced it to one ship service.

I think Superfast (who operated ot before NL) tried a two-ship service, but they reduced it to one ship service.

Yeah, although there were other factors in that, Superfast's business plan was always to find a route, get an EU subsidy for the first two years "to pay for the set up costs", operate the route for two years and then disappear.

The Scottish Viking (or Scottish Seaways???) is a more suitable ship for the run than the superfast ships ever were, as much as I despise those Vissentini ships they are fast, fuel efficient and reasonably good sea boats; depending on the charter rate which they have agreed with the owners they could make the route profitable, but hauliers really want a daily service and unless they can build up enough trade to make the run profitable with 2 ships then they will struggle to keep it going long term.
