Well in the last year I have went through 5 Graphics Cards
Now that my friends is over board
My Graphics cards have been <in order and rated>
1. Built in Emachines Card :)
2. A really old NVidia Card :-\
3. NVidia 6800 :(
4. ATI Radion >:(
5. NVidia 7600 :)
I've heard that the NVidia 8800 is the best but I want to know.
P.S. ;D was the highest
-
My card is RX3870-T2D512E-OC x 2 in Cross fire it's a overclock edition from msi and works perfect
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1365&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=137
but with Yost on its a fantastic cards, take almost every games without problem's
Ati has got a bad roomer but no their build it up again and the new drivers for win xp32 or 64 bit and vista 32 or 64 bit is there no problem with
so i sett ati card as NR 1
but this one NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT as a good nr 2

GeForce 8800 Ultra with 1 gb memory
----
Correction: 768 MB :D :D :D :D
If you are not referring to another Gainward model then ;D
I have 8800 Ultra and it's no problem to run SS on full with this card. No doubt about that! ;D
-
Please, use the search. This subject has been up nummerous times.
Oh, and i have a Dell lap-top with a nVidia 8600m GT 265mb. Works fine. :)
-
I have a HP Laptop with a NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GS and I have all graphics options on full and it runs fast and smooth :).
-
I have got a NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GT 512 MB, and it works very nice and fast. :)
-
I have nvidia 8800GT with 512 mb. it works perfect ;D
-
I have XFX 8800 GT XXX 512 Mb and it handles ShipSim very good(It runs FSX on full graphics too,and it runs smooth) :)
The bad thing about this model is that the fan is running at full speed all the time no matter how hot the card is and its impossible to control the RPM with any software.
-
you might consider mounting a different fan on your card Lanedre, though that could mean you lose your warranty.
I have the same card by the way,(also XFX "alpha dog"). Thankfully it has variable fan-speed..
It's a different model I guess..
-
I have looked on this but I don't know if it will fit the card?
Zalman VF900-Cu
-
I have heard of the Zalman cooler, it's supposed to be pretty good. I don't know if it fits though.
I found something else that perhaps you don't know about, the link is below. Perhaps it can help you..
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163
Of course you can also check the FAQ page on the nVidia site..
http://www.nvidia.com/page/support.html
-
I have tried RivaTuner but it couldn't change the RPM on my graphics card :(
So it looks like I am going to buy a new cooler soon :)
And thanks for the help saltydog ;)
-
you're welcome Lanedre, let us know how it works out... :)
-
what does minimum system requirments do and does the game to long to load because im getting the minimum requirements but the main thing is does it work properly thats all i need to know
please help
capt kieran
-
The listed minimum system requirements capt kieran are for version 1.0 of the game. Any updates/add-ons applied to your game will increase these requirements ;)
Any problems with the game, you need to search/post in Technical support for answers :)
Regards.
DJM.
-
Ready and waiting, capt kieran ;D ;)
-
ok so a geeforce 8600 would work
but how much would it cost?
because my parents arent really sure if they want to buy the system requirements
-
Hi,
ich have Geeforce 8600 GT
MFG Andy
-
Currently, Nvidia has the best performing cards.
The 8800 series are top of the line right now.
-
yes, but the 9's are on the horizon... :)
-
I have one Nvidia 7950GT and it works veryyyyyy fine ;D
(DDR3 512Mb)
No frame drop in any moment. Yep!
-
yes, but the 9's are on the horizon... :)
And the 9-series are a cheap sale trick from Nvidia. But it can be a nice series of card anyway if you want to upgrade from the 7-series for example. I have been reading about 9800 GX2 and it's not much "yihhaaa" according to the biggest HW website here in Norway :P
-
I did run a 7900gs 256mb on xp excellent card, ive now an additional pc vista with 2x 8600gs 512mb running SLI mode, to be honest i dont see much difference but nvidia for me, both pcs run fsx with ease.
-
i reckon the 8800 series is the best on the market so far, but the the best way to test it would be to use the most graphically intensive game i can think of :o FLIGHT SIM X!!!! :o (flight simulator 10)
-
I run FSX at full settings with an 8800GT 512 Mb,and it runs smooth but you do need a lot of memory(got a message once that my GPU was out of memory)
-
I have a ATI 8800 or 512 graphics card I LOVE IT. IT WORKS GREAT :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have the Nvidia 8800GTX. I think the 8800 series is one of the best chipsets produced so far. Not very impressed with the 9... series. I think the 8800 series works much better.
-
Well we broke 2 PAGES
Thanks for your input guys.
-
lol
-
Not a bad guide which compares many cards and performance, unfortunately shipsim is not on the list.

-
I'm having a NVIDIA 7600 shipped so I can play with the required graphics card!
-
My back up pc has a 7900gs 256mb xfx nvidia very good card and was cheap well £55 not bad these days for cards
-
i'm getting this card
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?ProductID=22218&Spec=1#ShowReview
for my new p.c. it's cheap, got lots of memory and has a decent clock speed considreing i play ss2008 on a readon 9800pro with 128 memory!!
-
nice
-
iv just ordered a geforce 8500 GTS with 1gig memory (obviously not a full 1 gig) but it does DX10 and vista and seems to be good...
i was originally running a quadro fx 540 (i said different on another topic...i checked it today and i was wrong)
-
I came across this, Lanedre and thought of your fanspeed problem. Perhaps interesting..? :)

I run everything on full with my GeForce 8400 :D

Why do you say that Terry? What's wrong with the 9 series??
-
ATI is best for me
-
Why do you say that Terry? What's wrong with the 9 series??
I get to try quite a lot of equipment, directly from manufacturers seeking my opinion or as part of my IT activities within my companies or just when I buy some new toys to play with.
For me, the 8800 GTX is the card to measure against. The 8600 is pretty close in performance, and right now, you can buy those models very cheaply.
The 9 series seems to be modelled on the lower-spec versions of the 8 series and then sold at a higher price because they're "new". They don't seem to have any "must have" new capabilities or anything I can see that makes them more desirable. Just a marketing man's (spits on the floor) gimmick.
I'd advise giving the 9 series a miss and getting 8600/8800.
I've read a number of reviews in PC Magazines and they seem to share my opinion.
Personally I prefer NVIDIA. ATI are OK, just not my preference. I think NVIDIA are easier to update, and seem to need less tweaking to get the best out of them. That said, there isn't any major difference between them, I think.
-
Thanks Terry,
You might have just influenced my next purchase in graphics cards ;)
-
No problem!
It's always worth shopping around. You know how rapidly the prices change and how frequently they change the specifications of the cards. Already things may be completely different.
I think the bad feedback may have stung them somewhat, after a period of increasing smugness!
-
I'm running two ASUS 8800GTX's. SS2008 runs smooth and looks terrific.

Sounds like a great solution. Good to see that the game supports SLI ;D
-
Thanks Terry,

I see that Novatech are currently selling Nvidia 8600 cards for less than 50 pounds. They are branded "Novatech 8600" but they are re-badged Nvidia underneath.

beleive it or not im running 08 on my laptop ... its only got a nvidia 7000m ... everybody puts it down but it works not too bad for a laptop .... as long as i dont max out the grafix on the game its playable ..
-
If/when you get any problems, please remember to let us know that when/if you need any advice. Laptiops can make a lot of difference to the route we follow when trying to work out the cause of any problems.
Hopefully you won't have any problems, though. It sounds as though you know what you're doing.
-
Terry,
the frame rate is the magor issue with the laptop ... Nvidia 7000 is the bottom end of the grafix they produce for laptops (did not know that until after i bought it ... thought nvidia would just work)
if its calm seas and not much around you, you dont notice much wrong. but rough seas rain and things like that i have to tiun the grafixs all the way down.
for you information tho, i play SH3 on my lappy too but runs so smooth and the sea is amazing ... its worth taking a look at the differece
-
wow lol
-
Yes, many people just don't understand that although other sims like WoW and so on look as though they have more gong on, they don't. Because Ship Sim has to calculate the position and trajectory of every water droplet, every drop of rain, the clouds, the vessels and everything else, it places immense requirements on your processor and graphics card.
I'm quite surprised that you can get your laptop to run so well (actually I'm a bit surprised you can get it to run at all!).
Well done, you!
-
wow lol .... what does that mean?
-
hay guyes b days is coming up and thinking about geting XFX nVidia 8600GT PCI-Express 1GB Graphics Card 8600 GT but i think i just have the normal pci not express duz this mean i will have to ge an adapter? also any one who as this card whats it like when its runing (nosy gets hot so on). also are the grapics as good as thay say thay are?
Chris S
-
Hi Chris.
So far as I know, if you don't have a PCI Express bus in your PC (and the correct type, either 16 or 32), then you can't use a card designed for PCI Express.
I'm not aware of any adaptors.
Sorry.
-
:( thats a shame looks like a realy good card :(
-
Yeah, it is. I've got one installed on a PC here. Works very well.
-
I like this Card:

ATI best
-
Give me Nvidia 8800GTX any day.
I've tried a lot of ATI cards over the years and although they've been OK, Nvidia seem to outperform them. They also have better updates for latest games and so on. Had less problems with Nvidia.

Wish you had told me that 3 years ago lol. I have a ATI 1600X Pro. Although it's ok, it's not blisteringly fast. However it is an AGP card :(
-
hay guys can any one recomend a good card about £50-80 and at least i pci slot id like two but if its only got one and one of thoses digatel outputs al get an adaptor :) thanks

well ati has good graphics but slow on the computer

Yabadabbadully... Nice to see that Nvidia is the leader in the poll ;D

Guys, I just recently bought a new PC (thus I have ship sim!). Anyway, I don't know a lot about the hard-ware side of things etc, so I was wondering could you give me some advice. I'm looking for a card that will let me run ship sim on FULL graphic settings (everything up). Here's my PC stats first of all:
Dell Inspiron 530
Windows XP Pro
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33Ghz 2.33Gz
3.00 GB of RAM
...and here's the Graphics card I've been looking at:
Link to Play.com page (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/667/874/-/5243599/Play-Value-Geforce-8800GT-512MB-PCI-Express-2-0-Graphics-Card/Product.html?searchtype=genre)
Will this card run Shipsim 2008 on FULL settings? If possible guys, please keep your answers to a simple yes, or 'no' with a recommendation please (as I have NO idea about why it's good/no good!). For recommendations, I'm willing to spend up to £150. Reason being is that I don't play games on my PC, I play them on my Xbox360. I'm only doing this for ship sim, so I feel that makes sense. :)
-
that card will run ship sim on full settings ;)
-
wach tho its PCI Express 2.0 its not the blue pci u would need to get an adaptor :)
-
What does that involve Chris? Could you possibly link me to one that's the equivelant power-wise, but doesn't require an adapter?
EDIT: See, now I'm confused because another friend I know through another game, told me I should be fine because 'anything with a Core2.0 (referring to my CPU I think), should have the slot'. PCIe or something like that. Very confusing lol
-
wach tho its PCI Express 2.0 its not the blue pci u would need to get an adaptor :)
Hi Chris.
As I said to you about a week ago, so far as I know, there is no such thing as a PCI => PCI-Express adaptor.
So does your post mean you've found one? Please give me a link for it, because that would be incredibly useful.
Or did you forget our conversation? ;)
-
well thats the thing im on the hunt for one acording to ibm thair is such a think as a PCI Adaptor but im wating for them to get back to me with some more information.
edit.
(Terry) terry do u miby have a diagram so that users could tell if thay have pci express or not ?
-
Hi Chris.
It's not easy to tell the difference between some of the bus types just by looking. PCI 16 & 32 look similar. They also look a bit like some of the older busses.
The only way is to find out from the Motherboard manufacturer. You can work that out from teh start-up screen when you start the PC. Make a note of the BIOS type and then go from there.
Google the bios type and you can generally find out the Motherboard. There is software around which will give details. Sandrasoft is one that I've used in the past. Again, Google it and you find what you need.
-
Tell me about it. ::)
Also the time has come to get a New Processor in my mother board.
I want to go quad core but,- I also don't want to go bankrupt. 8)
Any suggestions from the clan. ;)

Depends on how much you want to spend. You can pick a Quadcore up for about £70 I think (low spec one) but I would spend a bit more getting a decent one. I would get the Q6600 as I think it can overclock past 3Ghz with proper cooling..
-
iv herd that a Quadcore sumtimes is no faster than a dulecore but this is only from what iv heard from a few mates. on the puss i got a reply from ibm and that say that thay are working with ati to make an adaptor but thay cant give any more info and thay dont have a relase date :(
-
quad core is 2 cpu's for the RAM and 2 cpu's for the rest (so i have been told i may be wrong)
dual core is 2 cpu's doing everything.
i have duo core...meaning 1 cpu for RAM and 1 cpu for the rest (again so iv been told)
but as iv already mentioned i have 2 intel zeon 3.8gig's

:o :o :o
LOL! Yeah I have seen it...(before). It's from the faked 9-series which was supposed to be "soooo great". But it isn't and I would not even care to buy this. I'll wait until they stop their own "hyyyped sale" and start producing something that kicks the powerful 8-series down in the garbage can. But who knows... maybe ATI got something :D
Consider what Tom is saying in this article: http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/03/18/nvidia_geforce_9800_gx2_review/page16.html (http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/03/18/nvidia_geforce_9800_gx2_review/page16.html)

I voted other beacuse I don't know
-
lol
-
Well I know my graphics card isnt the best, probably the worst. Nvidia 6200 :-\
I hardly every get above 6fps, and the max ive seen when on outside view is 5fps. I dies down to 1-2fps with the big ships and marseille

I've got the card down from that, I have the exact same card apart from mine is a 1600X. I don't think you'll be disappointed :)

:D i cant wate u have me all exited now :D
-
Has anyone experiences with that one: Nvidia Geforce 8 8600 GT 1024 MB?
-
:D i cant wate u have me all exited now :D
Well my core clock speed on my GPU is 500Mhz, and my card can handle quite a lot (not everything on max but not on the lowest).
How much RAM do you have? At the moment my RAM is the bottle in having only 512mb :(
-
siting at 2gb the now but b day on the 5th and im geting 4gb :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
-
At the moment my RAM is the bottle in having only 512mb :(
And you can Run Ship Sim? That's quite amazing.
-
lol it must be extreemly slow !!
Chris S
-
And you can Run Ship Sim? That's quite amazing.
No actually it runs at a fairly decent FPS. Although environments and such take a long time to load, once loaded the sim runs fairly smoothly. Obviously to have it smooth as in no lag at all I have to turn the settings down, but with only 512mb RAM I can run ship sim quite well :)
-
And you can Run Ship Sim? That's quite amazing.
;D
When you look at the posts of some people who have what they believe are good spec PCs, but still have problems, your is doing very well. Give it a hug from me, please.
-
Has anyone experiences with that one: Nvidia Geforce 8 8600 GT 1024 MB?
not exact but a similar one. i have now a 8600 GTS with 512MB on my system and it runs shipsim smoothly at all the graphic sliders (inclusive ship wakes of all ships) full to the right. i,m very impressed with this nvidia.
-

Hehe I gave it a hug from you. It just whirred at me ;D
Although I can run ship sim, I do have a problem I've been meaning to ask you about which is bugging me like hell.
Shall I submit another thread?

Yes please. Best to keep the place tidy.
If you put it into Technical Support and include the DXdiag report, I'll see what I can do (if anything). As you might imagine, with the latest set of updates, things are a bit hectic. But gaining ground rapidly.
-
has anyone blown a graphics card before ::)
-
Yeah, I managed to it once. My own fault though. I was messing with th eheatsink and didn't refit it properly. ::)
-
Speaking of cooling problems, my 8800GT gets a bit warm and noisy under stress, so I'm thinking of fitting it with this..
All in all: the 8800GT is excellent " Bang for buck "... :)

Hi everyone, i have just ordered ss. Was just wandering if i will have to buy a graphics card, my pc runs flight sim fine or is it different?
-
Hi everyone, i have just ordered ss. Was just wandering if i will have to buy a graphics card, my pc runs flight sim fine or is it different?
Hi Jimbob19,
We can't tell you if your computer will run ship sim unless we know the specifications of it. Can you post your DXDIAG please?
Here is how to upload your DXdiag results:
Click Start button. Select "Run". Type "dxdiag" and press "Enter". You might be asked about WHQL drivers, click "Ok".
In the next window click the button that says "Save All Information", when the Save Dialog box appears, save the file to your desktop.
To upload the file here, select "Reply" to this message. Select "Additional Options" (underneath the text area)and choose "Browse". Browse to your desktop, click the file and click "Open". When finished post the message.
If using Vista you may have to press the Windows Key + R to get the "Run" prompt, depending on how your system is set up.
Regards,
Adam

my pc isn't currently connected to the internet, i would prefer to run ss on my laptop let me see if i can get the dxdiag.
-
Here you go it should be attatched. Thankyou
-
I blew mine by not cleaning ::) woops but I got a better one
-
Here you go it should be attatched. Thankyou
Hmm.... your laptop might struggle a bit, as your CPU isn't quite up to the minimum spec, but it should run at least :)
-
I know i will need to get some more RAM but will it be fine for graphics etc, i am not so bothered about the graphics being absolutely spot on i just want to be able to play the game. So will it play fine if i just increase the RAM?
-
I heard that the RAM inside the computers are be getting rid of

Well you are running Vista and more RAM is always welcome where Vista is concerned, so yes some RAM may help, but your CPU (processor) may struggle a tad. It should be able to play SS without too any problems though, just not on full graphics :)
-
Is there any way i can increase the performance of my processor then. Thanks for your help, can't wait until it arrives and i can get started.
-
well u can make it run faster but it takes a long time and is hard to do
-
Its arrived and runs very slow on my laptop, my pc has linux on it how do i get it back to windows?

hay guys can any one explaine to me what is a crossfire bridge for?
Chris S
-
Hi Chris.
A crossfire bridge is a cable that connects two crossfir graphics cards so that you can produce a "nearly twice as good" graphics card.
For details of crossfire, see:
http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/faq.html
For the bridge, see:

I don't really know. I've never tried any of them, and I haven't seen any reviews. I know that when I got the 8800 GTX, it was a bit tight in my PC. The crossfire cards may be bigger, but I'm not sure.

I Use ATI Reardon HD RX 3870 card 512 mb memory and works perfect to ship simulator 08 and all add ones

Sorry to bump an oldish topic, but I just wanted to post and say thanks for all the advice people gave me regards GPU's. I've had mine installed about a week now, and it's fantastic. It's a Palit nVidia GeForce 8800GT, 512mb, and it's enabled my pc to run shipsim (and for those interested, Crysis!), on full settings. The game looks much better for it, and I'm still surprised by how much detail there is on the Solent. Had a little problem installing it initially due to my pc not uninstalling the old ATI drivers, but it has overall been a very good learning experience pc-wise. Lots of knowledge gained, and my favourite 'lazy' game now looks fantastic.

Excellent news there Jayshum ;D

Yep, those 8800 cards seem to be the best value for money. I regulalry test video cards and haven't found anything that beats them (8800 GTX being absolute king, but the other versions are all very close. Even the 8600 series are close.
You just have hand it to Nvidia.
Shame about the 9000 series though.

i thought the quadro fx would be better than the 8800 GTX....i know the 9000 series is useless lol

PC Buyer and another PC Mag (might have been PC World) did some comparisons recently and both said 8800 GTX = YIPPEE, best of class, best bang for the bucks, etc. I've not done a direct comparison against the Quadro but if two PC Mags separately come to the same conclusion, I guess I'd spend my money on that basis.
Depends what you want from your card, though. Many people can spend less and get everything they need from their card.

ATI got to do some remarkable stuff to catch up with Nvidia when the trend looks like this vote ;D
88% of the votes are Nvidia. Next situation may be that Nvidia and Intel comes together like AMD and ATI :)

8800GTX BFG OC on stock settings.
Need to overclock it tbh.
Followed by 7900GTX 512MB laptop edition.

Hello,
I am just posting here to update you with some information. I ran ship Sim on an old laptop with a very low end grafic card. Not really playable but i got by ok.
I now have a new laptop with a GF GM130 (1GB) card in it and the results for a laptop are outstanding. So If your looking to play this on a laptop (Maximum graphic options) check out this card.

Actually I agree with you on that: I experienced those cards - first one was overheating all the time making impossible to play games, the second went out after a year run, third (same first one) - still getting me mad!
