Yah she's nice looking but I don't like the open car deck. ;)

well atleast they lengthened the passenger decks. stena line kept it empty and not that beautiful. And such a long ship doesnt really need a full deck if not that many people travel with it all the time.

Caribou's Last Crossing- News story courtesy of The Cape Breton Post by JCollins.
NORTH SYDNEY — The MV Caribou, a vessel that has served the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia since 1986, will make her final voyage later this week.
Topics : Marine Atlantic , MV Blue Puttees , North Sydney , Port aux Basques , Canada
The Caribou is currently scheduled to leave North Sydney for the final time Thursday at 10:30 p.m., with the last scheduled sailing from Port aux Basques to depart at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
The Caribou will be decommissioned and berthed at an alternate site in North Sydney until future plans for her sale are finalized.
During her 24 years of service, it’s estimated the Caribou made more than 16,000 trips, carried approximately 3,000,000 passengers and over 2,000,000 vehicles.
“The retirement of the MV Caribou from the fleet will certainly be a bittersweet day within our corporation,†said Marine Atlantic’s president and CEO Wayne Follett. “While we are very excited about the potential of our new vessels and moving toward a modern and efficient fleet to better service our customers, we have many fond memories of the MV Caribou and the service she provided over the past 24 years. While the time has come to replace her, we will always recognize the contribution she made to our fleet during her years of service.â€
The Caribou made its inaugural voyage May 12, 1986, crossing the Gulf of St. Lawrence from North Sydney to Port aux Basques. Displacing over 16,000 tonnes and measuring 179 metres in length, the Caribou was the largest ferry ever built in Canada when it entered service. The vessel was named in memory of the SS Caribou that was sunk by German U-boats in the Second World War, killing 137 passengers and crew.
“This vessel has been the flagship of our fleet for many years and we will keep her memory alive and well within MAI.â€
The retirement of the Caribou marks another milestone in the transition to a modern and efficient fleet with the arrival of the MV Blue Puttees and the MV Highlanders.
Marine Atlantic is expected to take delivery of the Blue Puttees in early December followed by the Highlanders later in the new year.
“It is fair to say that capacity this summer was just not there to keep up with the demand,†Follett said. “We are very excited about the new fleet. It will significantly expand our capacity, increase our on time service and provide the customers with more modem amenities.â€
The Leif Ericson is expected to undergo a mid-life refit in January which will cost approximately $17 million.
“In the spring Marine Atlantic will have a totally renewed fleet with larger capacity and a much higher level of dependability,†he said. “At Marine Atlantic we are very excited to be able to move to an improved level of service starting in 2011.â€

see how great the new ships look,
there not 100% in hull blue. More a darker blue and some nice colours
see thats how a ferry should look like. not the stena explorer that doesnt even looks nice
so i think they will be great.
Atleast the company cares about all their ferries!
-
MV Blue Puttees and MV Highlanders look ok.
But I like the MV Caribou and MV Joseph And Clara Smallwood a lot more. ;)

Kyle,
What's the local reaction? Are they happy with their new ferries or are they still missing their old ones?
-
those two ships so good!
Better than the old shape they were in :)
-
Kyle,
What's the local reaction? Are they happy with their new ferries or are they still missing their old ones?
I don't know alot of the reactions but most said they where ugly.
I like the old Gulfspan ferries and MV Atlantic Vision better my self.
I just don't like the open car deck on the new boats.
but we will have to see what the new boats can do.
Kyle
-
That doesn't surprise me, Kyle
Where I came from, we got two new ferries which were delivered in 2005 and 2007 respectively and some folks still miss the old ferries. Don't get me wrong, these new ferries may be very modern and have superior facilities but you can't beat an old favourite with lots of character.
-
Ok I see.
Your right about this you can't beat an old favourite with lots of character.
I just like to see new Gulfspan ferries be build Like the caribou & the smallwood.
Kyle

Well MV Blue Puttees is now in full service on the run.
But I am not hearing good things about her service so far.
This post #367 is from shipspotting.com
It is about MV Blue Puttees.
Last nights crossong in weather was a disaster..and it wasnt that bad. 2 hrs behind schedule entering PAB..
Breakfast this morning,(Mar19,2011)couldnt be served as the dish's were smashed,Couldnt trust the ship to fire up the kitchen for fear of injury according to crew
I had family on that crossing
A family member of mine(an experienced mariner) was thrown out of the bunk when Puttee's hove out in a bad list.their belongings thrown around their cabin..they thought they were gone.
A crew member was injured and had to be taken to hospital with a injury possibly to the head.
Announcements were made for passengers to remain in their seats ,in their bunks
Announcements were made requesting a nurse or a doctor to come forward..
some crew want off, those who were on the trip with the incident to St. John's,wished they never got back on..Half flew back home after hitting port in St. John's..This is what the crew were saying..acording to a person who was there Im not making this up.
Children were crying and other passengers teriffied. a few vomitting
In the words of my family member . some crew looked like a scene out of "Perfect Storm"..Shaken and scared..
Her first commercial test in moderate weather is a Failure...
So is you want to read more here is the link http://forum.shipspotting.com/index.php/topic,8361.375.html
Kyle
-
Talking about exaggerating..
After reading the post you quoted, i get the feeling they hired the ex crew of the Sea Shepard :-\ Stuff that's not properly secured does have the tendency to fly around during rough weather.. You can't blame the ship for people vomitting because they are seasick, that's natural..
-
ya it was just not a good trip at all.
Kyle
-
MV Highlanders is now register to St john's NL

-
Sorry I am just getting to this now.
But the Caribou & Smallwood have been sold ! :'(
And now there is a strong possiblity that the MV Caribou and the sister MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood have been sold for scrapping. If that is true I will be vary angry >:( They still have a lot of life in them !
And now the Caribou has been renamed Caribo and is flying the Indian flag. That is not good at all !
Both pic's taken by my friend Don merritt.

The fact that the caribou has been renamed to caribo leads me to belive that its next use is going to be as tin cans :/
-
uh, i dont know if youre just joking, but the "u" clearly has just been left unpainted.
that doesent mean the name was changed.
i mean, seriously, a ship named caribo?

normally a sign that the ship is heading to the breakers I am afraid... :/

I don't know what is going to happen to them yet. But as soon as I know I will be posting it here. :)
I don't where you could get plans for them. But If you make a model of one of them I love to see it
Kyle

As of last night the Caribo has started it's way in to the canal.
And the Smallwood is now at Port Said, Egypt.

India seems to be buying a fair few ships that still have a decent life span left in them (we don't KNOW, do we- they might be wrecks under the nice paint).
Even the Pride of Telemark went for a price over 50% higher than you'd expect from a scrap hulk. There has been a decline in the worldwide price of scrap steel over the past year- although it went back up after the quake in Japan.
Odd.
-
yeah i just got a signsatr!

From two new Newfoundland ferries?
-
TFK,
If you would actually read what's being posted, you could see that both ferries are travelling to their new destination. I don't see anything wrong with this topic being kept alive with this info, afterall it still involves the ferries where this topic is all about.
It's not up to you to decide if a topic is useful or not.
-
is this topic still going on?
I thought that the old ships were gone, new ships came and end of story...
Strange i dont see anything special about keeping the topic alive unless there is an update on maybe new ships to the fleet or ships being taken.
Hi TFK
I made this topic to be about the two new ferries and the two old ferries too.
So the two old ferries are still on there way to there new home so lot's of news to come yet.
I hope this help you see y this topic is still alive :)
Oh and thx Ballast :)
Kyle
-
Egypt? :o I didnt see that coming.

It is now reported that the MV Smallwood/8604797 has been beached at Alang, Oct 03/11. :'(
This is a sad end to a great ferry :( No word on the MV Caribo yet but she is most likely on the beached now too :'(
Kyle
-
The smallwood has been beached at alang? Oh dear god... on the flip side it makes getting hold of plans easier

Yes it has been beached.
Kyle
-
That is surprising given that they are still relatively modern ships.
Doesn't bode well for the Pride of Telemark, the Pride of Dover and Calais...
Now I just have to make sure SPL takes care of Pride of Bilbao.... wrong age to be redundant for a great big ship..
-
Ya I know 24 & 21yrs old. It is just sad that MA sold them for scrap. Just makes me vary angry at MA & the gov of canada >:( I heard the Pride of Telemark was going for scrap too :( She was following the same route that the Caribo & smallwood where going on.
Kyle
-
Well they are now on the beach at Alang. This just a sad way for them to go :'(
As reported:
Caribou- beached at Alang 10/10/2011 Plot 58
Smallwood-beached at Alang 10/13/2011 Plot 60

Alang.... i hate that word :(. it filles my minds of ships being torn apart on a barren shore, forgotten by everyone who knew them. That just ruined my evening. :C

Look on the bright side. Although she (or they) may sit on the beaches of, the-breakyard-no-one-can-tell-by-name, very soon, the materials will be reused right? Imagine: Caribo being scrapped --> a pile of materials --> sold to the sellers who want the materials --> new products being made out of those materials. :)
-
I wonder if the Pride of Telemark has arrived yet.
It was sold for a price well beyond the norm for scrap but it appears that is its fate nonetheless.
Now, I have about 7 years to add a few more million quid to buy a certain ship from SPL...

Last time I heard any thing on her she was in Gibraltar. She was doing the same route the Caribou & Smallwood where doing.

You know, i almost hope theres no pictures of them on the beach. its better for me to have ONLY images of them doing what they were meant to do.
-
I can have a ask round if you are interested in seeing the "gory pics"?
-
As sad as it would be I would still like to see pic's of them on the beach.
Kyle

I will see what I can do :)

May they rest in peace.
Your service will not be forgotten.
Interesting note :
Apparently, a condition of the sale of the vessels was that they be broken up at a IMO yard that has green credentials. Now, Last time I checked, alang had non of these... ::)
-
so what exactly are green credentials?

£2.2 million each... for scrap. That's impressive. I hope alang gets a move on as with the global price of iron peaking (and most expect it to fall heavily) and now consumption being reduced...
China, one of the biggest importers of scrap iron, has masses of the stuff now... Expect to see worldwide demand fall imminently.
If scrap prices fall too quickly, alang will make massive losses.
-
£2.2mill for each of them? Holy moly....... Somone at alang has deep pockets!
Personnally I hope the price's crash, so that alang goes under, although the impacts worldwide would be monumental.
-
Have seen a few ships for sale to breakers at around $150 / ton recently, while there are abviously other factors which affect the overall price the steel cost is by far the biggest issue.
-
They where worth more $ then that.
But the is what alang got them for.
Kyle
-
They are only worth what someone will pay for them, the heap of junk that I am on at the moment is on the market for $65, that doesn't mean she is worth that, as is evidenced by the fact that no-one will buy the bloomin' thing and put us all out of our misery.
-
$65? Wow a bargain ;D
I'll give them 64.99 xD
-
$65? I can afford that! let me go break my piggybank
-
$65? I can afford that! let me go break my piggybank
Whats $65?
-
Whats $65?
the amount of $ i earn every minute. ;D
-
erm, yeah....
slight typo there, $65 million
I wish it was $65 dollars, at that price someone might be daft enough to buy the thing, although even then probably only scrap dealers.
-

Indeed. The Atlantic vision looks better in my opinion.

For the budding naval architects out there there are some good pics on there to give you an idea of how ships are constructed.

They where both there for there refits. Missfit 2 aka Highlanders was there 1st then when she get back Missfit 1 aka Blue puttees was there 2nd. Now there is talk of getting rid of the Vision ! And replacing it with this ugly thing MV Watling Street but it is just a roomer for now and I hope it says that way !! The Vision is the only good boat they have left now !

:o
They cannot seriously be considering putting the Watling Street on that service?
If you think that the 2 ex Stena ships are unsuited, then just wait until you see that up there! I sailed on her when she was running between Barcelona and Palma de Majorca and she was a disaster then! I still occasionally wake up with cold sweat in the night thinking of that ship and her sister the Norman Voyager.
She is also a half sister to the new Vikings on the Irish Sea.

Well that is the roomer I have heard. I hope it is just a roomer & and I don't hear any more about it. The Vision charter is not up till some time next year.
Kyle
-
WHAT?
Just...NO
Cant they just make up their minds!!!
charter this repair that
Just call quebec and go HEY, we need 3 decent ferries for the cabot strait
Just like last time remember?
-
I love to see new ferries made here in Canada.
Kyle
-
Me too.
but why do they insist on chartering?
is it cheaper?
-
Me too.
but why do they insist on chartering?

charter will be cheaper then paying for a brand new newbuild I am afraid...
What route needs a newbuild?
-
North Sydney to Port-aux-Basques run.
Kyle
-
charter will be cheaper then paying for a brand new newbuild I am afraid...
What route needs a newbuild?
perhaps.......but they have spent so much on repairs already!!!!!
Over 30 million i heard.....
-
Ouch
bear in mind though a newbuild... well the Spirit of Britain coost ~€150 Million...
-
Ships are not cheap to run!
$30M on repairs is a lot of money, to give an example the annual running budget for my present ship (1300 pax, 29 years old) is 9.7M euro, I was involved in the dry docking of a 25 year old ship which went horribly wrong and ended up with the replacing of large sections of steel, the total cost of that dry dock was 27M euros.
When you look at the above figures I doubt that they have really spent 30M in repairs on two ships, that figure might be the total running cost of the 2 ships, but I don't think it is a repair cost. (unless of course the figure is in canadian dollars and the exchange rate to USD is huge.
The costs involved in running ships are enormous, the above running budget figure does not include food and drink, nor does it include fuel (presntly US$450,000 every 2 weeks)
-
Clanky, have you ever seen the running costs for Dennis Dart buses these days...? :-\
-
speaking of food and drink the Atlantic visions prices are ridiculous!!!!!
almost 4 dollars for a bottle of water!!!!!
And with no fountain nor vending machines its clear to see what their plan is.
milk you as long as your aboard.

Yep it is ridiculous ! And it is like that on all there boats.
Kyle

Also on the Lake Michigan Carferry line! Water is $5.00, and no vendos or fountains. Although in the cabins there is a seperate tap for drinking water, there is no way to get a cup.
-
I actualy resorted to slurping from the tap in my cabin as well.
At least there was cups for me.

one of those cases when a local misery.. or whatever you can call it turns in to international sensation.................... 2 new ferries in newfoundland

Methinks this topics dead.....

Yep pretty much. I do all my talking about them now on our FB group for MA boats.
