Funny, a ship on airbags. Airbags could be used along the hulls of passenger vessels, when they capsize these airbags will be inflated and will prevent rolling over and sinking.

They'd have to be mahoosive surley, for say 100,000T to roll onto it? ;D Then there's lifeboat launching
-
Th thing is you can launch a ship with these ( as so many are needed) and then when they get taken out to sea by the launch you can go out and pick them up!
Only problem is how do you stop the boat from being launched completely before the champains smashed? ;)
-
It looks kinda funny seeing a ship being launched with these. :P Like a bunch of big sausages.
I believe they use this method in asian countries mostly, but I could be wrong.
-
What makes me wonder is why is this system is better than the old system? Why reinvent something if it's working? ???
-
This system exists for quite some time if I'm correct and is merely another alternative. Probably relatively cheap since you don't need an advanced ramp structure. I have never seen it in Europe and I guess that won't change soon.
-
Probably as I think the risks outweigh (saftey) the benefit (the cost) for it to be used in Europe
-
Probably. European companies rather launch a ship in a controlled environment as much as possible. Sending it on a balloon ride doesn't really qualify for that I would reckon. :P
-
And why build the ship so far away from water?that boat seems to come from a few miles away just rolling - if some balloons were slightly off and it caused the ship to go a little bit in the wrong way ( maybe 1cm per ballon) and you might have a boat coming off its balloons with no way of stopping 30,000 tones of metal!
-
It would make a funny sight though. ;D
-
And an expensive one...
