Red Eagle Super Pack
« on: October 17, 2009, 02:46:15 »

I downloaded the Super Pack for Red Eagle, but I don't see the missions when I start the Sim.  The install asked me for the path which I selected.  Any Ideas?

You should find them in Play > Custom missions, unless you changed the default.

Before I install the new Red Eagle Superpack, a few questions:
How realistic is it ?  I mean the reduced draft and new controls..(the draft is now 2.75 m, what is the new
draft?)
If I decide I don't like it and want my "old" Red Eagle back, is that possible without reinstalling the game..?

Bottom line: what is the real draught of Red Eagle, and which controls come closest to the real thing..?

Hi Saltydog.

When I changed the draft, it was to enable Red Eagle to access Portsmouth Harbour. It was the most I could trim off that didn't significantly affect the handling.

"Draft" is somewhat irrelevant here, since the depth of water in the Solent environment is not typical (except at the very lowest of all spring tides, with high pressure and very strong winds from due north and....).

If you don't like it, you can download the separate Red Eagle revised dynamics patch from Creators Forum. That includes the facility to restore it to the original.

I'll move this to "General Discussions", where more people are likely to see it.

Thanks Terry, it would be nice to take Red Eagle into Portsmouth.. I suppose the more difficult alternative would be to deepen the water there..
I think I'll try your suggestion of downloading from Creators Forum.. :)

Hi Saltydog.

I included a couple of my own missions in the Super Pack. They take you into Portsmouth. I enyoyed them when I wrote them and still play them from time to time (when I have any time!). Hopefully you'll enjoy them as well.

And the radio pack is made from genuine Solent sounds from a few nights ago.

And the horn sound has never been released before either.

Next week's release will be fun, as well

The new Red Eagle is great.  I said a long time ago I missed being able to take anything  of a reasonable size into Portsmouth. The new controls handle well with my BU0836 controller
Only thing I wish is that owners of ships in the new mission would comply the with relevent navigation lighting rules.
The Add-on loaded and worked first time.

Hi,

I expected that to be the case.

It is not very much different to me, as I stear with the keybord most of the time.

You, as an expert with RE should be able to notice the differance, I think.

As you, I steer with keyboard..I would hardly consider myself an expert, more an enthousiastic landlubber.. ;)
I suspect the difference may be in reverse steering, I have no trouble there..

Hi SD,
The appearance has not changed significantly, only the way that the controls function on the after station.

The differance between keyboardstearing and the mousestearing is:

Mousestearing gose 360 degrees continued. Keyboardstearing is restricted to 180 right or 180 left.

Since the after station is to be controled, only by mousestearing, then there is change to be noticed.

Thanks Marty, for your addisional comments and Red-Eagle Controle-instructions in .Pdf

Same here, but it would be more realistic, if the movement of the vessel
at let us say about 90 degrees, would show better. Specialy in low speeds.
That is why the rotation of the wheels should be over 360 to continue for more exact / direct controle.

To help precisionstearing here; I assigned extra keys to controle the rudders/pods/VSP
added: "Q" and "W" for 1st rudder and Num. "/" and "*" for 2nd rudder stearing.

Mousestearing is not exact enough for me, but that is a personal feeling.

Hi Terry,
Those are two nicely-constructed missions; they could serve as examples for others.

I would go as far as to say they SHOULD serve as examples, without question.

Regarding the controls: there were no changes to the console in the wheelhouse. Only the controls that float on the lower left hand side of the screen were adjusted.

The workings of the aft controls were fixed, as they had been faulty since day 1. But the look was not changed at all.

If anyone doesn't like them, but wants to keep the rest of the pack, see my post above.

Next week's release will allow you to select each element (controls, horns, etc) so you have complete choice. It will also include a "roll back to original" function.

Thanks for the kind comments Marty and Angus. Much appreciated. Bribe money is in the post.

It takes me around 3-5 days to plan, write, test and adjust each mission.

I try to make sure that the spelling and grammar are correct. I try to make sure that the rogue punctuation is not likely to occur (where Ship Simulator splits the comma from the sentence and places it alone on the next line if it occurs at the border of the dialogue box).

I try to make the vessel movements as realistic as possible, within the confines of the simulator.

I try to make sure that AI appearance and disappearance is done out of sight.

I try to consider all of the potential traps and I try to estimate where users are likely to be with respect to the AI in the area (so as to either make things awkward or make them as realistic as possible).

There are so many things to consider, that there is always something lurking...

I'm pleased with the new dynamics, radio sounds and the new horn as well!

Nothing has changed in that regard. But you can't steer using the arrow keys, because it has no rudders.

Basically, to go left, turn the top right wheel clockwise, so that the white "needle" points to the right (imagine that causes the bow to rotate clockwise).

Or turn the top left wheel anticlockwise, so that the the white "needle" points to the left (imagine that causes the stern to rotate anticlockwise).

To "turn on a sixpence" do both those things.

Since you've left, it takes over 45 minutes to go up the Selsey Road and get onto the A27 in the morning. Speed limits, bumps in the road, eternal roadworks and jammed full of cars, tractors and lories full of lettuce...
