New graphic card - advice please
« on: May 26, 2013, 13:02:59 »

Hi guys,

I'm wondering if any of you could help me?

I'm thinking of replacing my 6 years old graphic card GeForce 8800GT 512Mb, which is getting on a bit now. It has always been able to achieve between 19 fps (Sydney harbour) and 40 fps (Atlantic Ocean) in 'Medium' settings.

However the 8800GT struggles a lot in 'High' settings and the vessels suffer from 'jerky' movement when going at full speed, and the fps are typically between 12-30.

I'm considering a GeForce GTX 660, so I'm wondering if anyone who has one will be able to tell me if this is a good graphic card upgrade for me, and more importantly good enough for SSE?

Many thanks

The GTX 660 seems a very good card..  How's your PSU..?

Hi Kevin,
I have the Nvidia GTX 660 installed in my machine and I find it to be very good.
I attach a picture which shows that it is a very big thing!! I also attach  my Dxdiag so you can see the whole set up. I also added the 600w PSU, 8GB RAM, and a cooling fan to be on the safe side.

Regards,
Angus.

I recently upgraded from GeForce 6850 to GTX 660, and that was somewhat OK.

However upgrading from AMD Phenum II to Intel 5, 3570 really increased performance.

Many thanks to all who has replied  :)

My PSU is 520w, which I have been told should be OK, although I can upgrade to 600w if necessary.

My PC case has got a cooling fan also, so it'll be OK temperature-wise.

Just now my processor is Intel i3-540 (3.06 GHz) which I'm guessing is OK for now, although I'm considering upgrading to Intel i5-3570K (3.4 GHz) at some point in future - that is, assuming my motherboard is able to accept the upgraded CPU.

That's quite a beast, Angus :)

Yes the size was a bit worrying - I've checked the dimensions and 8800GT is 9 inches long, a 660 GTX is around an inch longer. I've opened up my PC case and it looks a 660 GTX will fit - but only just!
